GRADING POLICIES:
There will be three exams, twelve short quizzes and four (monthly) participation grades assigned in this course. The following outlines the percentages assigned to each and briefly describes what each involves.

Three Exams: 70%

20% Exam #1:

  • "The Cask of Amantillado," Poe
  • "The Black Cat," Poe
  • "The 1,000,000 Bank Note," Twain
  • "The 30,000 Bequest," Twain

25% Exam #2:

  • "The Fall of the House of Usher," Poe
  • "The Tell-Tale Heart," Poe
  • "The Man Who Corrupted Hadleyburg," Twain

25% Exam #3:

  • "A Double-Barreled Detective Story," Twain
  • "The Masque of the Red Death," Poe
  • "Was It Heaven Or Was It Hell?" Twain
  • "Ms. Found In A Bottle," Poe
  • "The Dairy of Adam and Eve," Twain

For each of the first two exams, you will be asked to prepare a question ahead of time at home and to write about it in class. On Exam#1, you may choose to answer either a question about a Poe story or one about a Twain story. Whichever author you choose to write about on the first exam, you may not write about on the second exam. So, if you write about Poe on Exam #1, you must write about Twain on Exam #2. The third exam, the final, you will be asked to prepare three questions ahead of time at home and to write on two of them in class at our designated exam time during final week. The final exam you are given ahead of time will have four questions on it; only two of those will appear on the actual final exam. Because you will not know which two will appear on the actual exam, you will need to prepare answers to three of the four you receive ahead of the exam.

Twelve Quizzes: 10%

  • "The Cask of Amantillado,"
  • "The Black Cat"
  • "The 1,000,000 Bank Note"
  • "The $30,000 Bequest"
  • "The Fall of the House of Usher":
  • "The Tell-Tale Heart"
  • "The Man Who Corrupted Hadleyburg"
  • "A Double-Barreled Detective Story"
  • "The Masque of the Red Death"
  • "Was It Heaven Or Was It Hell?"
  • "Ms. Found In A Bottle"
  • "The Dairy of Adam and Eve"

Quizzes will focus on the texts' literal level; they will not be interpretive. They will ask simple questions that require only short answers about the characters and events of the texts. (Example: Who corrupted Hadleyburg?)

Class Participation: 20%
At the end of every three to four weeks, you will receive a letter grade reflecting the quality of your participation for that period. Each grade will be worth 5% of the overall grade.
