DEBORAH E. BRASSARD
Associate Professor of English

Ph.D., Purdue University
M.A., Boston College
B.A., Boston University

Dr. Deborah Brassard earned her B.A. degree from Boston University in 1975, her M.A. from Boston College in 1977, and her Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1984. Her area of specialization is modern British and American literature with a focus on metaphysics. She offers, among others, the following upper level courses: Mystical Writers of Earth, Poe and Twain, Feminine Fiction, Joyce and Woolf, Faulkner and Hemingway, and Modern British, Continental and American Drama. She teaches Shakespeare as well.

Dr. Brassard's courses are discussion-based and emphasize critical thinking and collaborative learning. Her classes are communities; the class members sit in a circle to facilitate an equal exchange, and group discussions are designed around problem-solving investigations into the meaning of the literature. She believes that the art of literature is its attempt to reveal the meaning of life itself. Such relevant subject matter makes for engaging and often intense classroom experiences.

A native of New England, Dr. Brassard moved to Pennsylvania in 1984. She has been a member of the Marywood faculty since 1991.
