Although it has the reputation of being daunting, the strangeness that is partly the reason it has earned this is one of the reasons I love it. From a trickle of blood that has a mind of its own, taking turns around corners and through yards, to the patriarch of the main family being tied to a tree and suddenly knowing how to speak Latin fluently, to the most beautiful woman in the world being lifted into a sky that has opened up to receive her, this book has cemented Garcia Marquez as my favorite author. He writes without a sense of "floweriness," yet ensures that a fantastical picture is painted in your mind nonetheless.
