ENGL 364 Dr. Helen Bittel

Mrs. Dalloway Study Guide #1
Please answer all four questions.
  1. A number of striking images and phrases are repeated frequently throughout the narrative. These include but are not limited to gifts, bells/clocks, flowers/roses, trees, the moon, windows and doors, Peter's pocketknife, etc. Take any three images or phrases (and these can include images/phrases not mentioned above) and trace their recurrence throughout the second reading section (p. 2411 to 2439). Where do they occur, specifically? What are the contexts? How might we interpret them or how do they speak to the larger themes and concerns of the novel?
  2. In the beginning of the novel (the portion you read for Thursday), there are two scenes that bring large numbers of people together and that are given so much detail and attention as to seem symbolic: the motorcar and the aeroplane. Choose one of these scenes and offer your best interpretation. How is it significant? How does it speak to the larger themes and concerns of the novel?
  3. Focusing on the section read for Tuesday (2411-39), identify at least 3 moments that seem to be engaging with specifically modernist concerns or values. Explain how they are modernist and what Woolf seems to be saying at these moments.
  4. What are the key things we learn about Clarissa Dalloway in this section (2411-39)? Has our impression of her changed in any way since the beginning of the novel? If so, how?
