Rubric for Essay Three

  • The essay is analytical; it delves beneath the surface of the text and develops an argument.
  • The breadth, depth, and scope of essay are appropriate to assignment
  • The writer demonstrates real (and accurate) knowledge of the text and/or subject
  • The writer makes original claims or offers original insights

II. Argumentation 0 2 4 6 8

  • The author explains his/her reasoning (i.e. how an example supports a claim) clearly and logically; the reader does not need to ask "why?" or "how so?"
  • The author offers specifics and avoids broad or unsupported generalizations
  • The author uses examples to illustrate or support claims where helpful
  • The amount of detail is proportional to importance

  • The author arranges ideas into focused, fully-developed, proportional paragraphs
  • The author sticks to the point and avoids irrelevant information or tangents
  • The author orders paragraphs strategically (i.e. groups related ideas together, doesn't jump around, presents ideas in a logical sequence)
  • The essay demonstrates coherence and unity

IV. Correctness and Expression 0 1 2 3 4

  • The author abides by the conventions of standard written English, including grammar, mechanics (punctuation and capitalization), spelling, and usage (i.e. precise word choices and idiomatic phrasing).
  • Ideas are expressed clearly and precisely; the author's train of thought is easy to follow
  • Polished, varied sentences give a sense of continuity and facilitate comprehension
