Third Essay: ENGL 364W Dr. Helen Bittel Early Deadline: If you wish to have the
option of revising this essay (either as your required
revision or to raise your grade), submit it by Thursday,
December 2 so that I can get it back to you before
classes end. Option 1: Is Mrs. Dalloway a feminist novel? Why or why not? Note that to argue this effectively, you will need to identify (and perhaps defend) the criteria for "feminist novel." You will also need to shape your paper around a clear thesis statement and to provide specific support (examples, reasons, etc.) for your claims. Option 2. One of the paradoxes of Mrs. Dalloway is that it is set entirely on the home front and is preoccupied with the most domestic of concerns, yet it is at the same time very much a war novel. Write an essay defending this statement. In your conclusion, address the question of why Woolf might have chosen to address the war through this lens and what she gains/risks in doing so, both aesthetically and politically. Option 3. Invent your own essay topic related to Mrs. Dalloway. Your topic should be analytical rather than informational; you will need to make an argument. If you choose this option, you must submit a very brief 2-3 sentence proposal at least 48 hours before the deadline; email is fine. Good luck! Please let me know if you have questions.
