Book Two

  1. What does Romney initially argue about women and poetry, and how does Aurora refute his claim? (l. 85-115)
  2. Why, according to Romney, can't women be good poets, in the sections labeled "No Female Christ" (l. 179-225)
  3. Why does Romney want to marry Aurora? And why does she turn down his proposal? (l. 350-527)
    Book Three
  4. What is Aurora's state of mind when this section opens? What is in the first four letters she opens? Why does EBB take so much space going through letters from Aurora's critics? (l. 36-64)
  5. What do the three nasty critics (Belfair, Stokes, Jobson) want from Aurora's poetry (that is, believe the consumer public wants? How does Aurora feel about these requests? (l. 68-98) 
  6. Why does Carrington admire Romney Leigh more than Lord Howe? Why does Aurora find Carrington's 2nd sketch a better portrait of an artist than the first? (l. 120-143)
  7. What does she see out her window and what does this have to do with her theory of art? (l. 169-204)

  8. What is Aurora's (and presumably Barrett Browning's) primary argument in the selection from Book 5 ("Epic Art and Modern Life)?
