University Librarian (#982)

Summary of Duties

The University Librarian reports to the Provost, provides leadership and strategic planning for the Marywood Library & Learning Commons and plays a proactive and creative role in fostering a climate conducive to supporting teaching, learning, and scholarship across campus. The University Librarian oversees all staff, budgets, strategic initiatives, and processes and procedures associated with the Library and actively promotes a culture of service in support of students, faculty, staff, and the local community. This person supports the University's strategic plan, retention initiatives, and the academic curriculum of all programs by providing an inclusive state-of-the-art facility and programs with equitable access to resources for all. The University Librarian holds faculty status; rank based on experience and is eligible for promotion and tenure on the same schedule as tenure-track faculty.

As the intellectual and social heart of campus, the Learning Commons puts knowledge creation at the fore of the educational experience. Students develop patterns of discovery and achievement that last a lifetime, with abundant opportunities to discern what learning styles and environments work best for them. The 72,000 square feet facility includes four levels of collaborative and private study space, an Automated Storage and Retrieval System, computer lab, archives, instruction room and café.

This position requires an understanding of and willingness to operationalize Marywood's mission and core values. The ideal candidate is someone with mature professionalism, strong leadership skills and a self-propelling interest in service oriented work.

A Master’s of Library Science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association is required. A second master's degree in a subject area or a doctorate/PhD is preferred.

Work Experience Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible supervisory and administrative experience in an academic library.

Skill Requirements:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to provide and model exceptional service
  • Proven ability to establish priorities and manage multiple responsibilities
  • Knowledge and deep understanding of both traditional and emerging academic library services and standards, as well as emerging technologies
  • Experience with budgets, personnel management, planning, and assessment


Skills Preferred:

  • Experience in leadership role in higher education
  • Experience working with students, faculty, and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Experience with obtaining external funding including successful grant writing and management
  • Experience in developing an Information Literacy curriculum

Essential Elements

  • Oversee the Library staff, facilities, and daily operations while modelling and encouraging a collaborative work environment
  • Lead the design, implementation, marketing, and assessment of Library policies, services and programs
  • Manage the financial activities of the Library including the development and monitoring of the annual operating budgets and the strategic and effective allocation of resources
  • Facilitate an inclusive process to develop collections that support academic programs and promote information literacy across the curriculum
  • Interpret and adhere to established policies; identify the need for new policies or changes to existing policies; and work with other units to revise or develop new policies when needed
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external constituencies
  • Maintain and enhance physical facilities with available resources and in accordance with the strategic plan
  • Collaborate with and support other units on an on-going basis, including Schools, Departments, Colleges, the Office of Student Success, the Office of Institutional Equity & Inclusion, and the Office of Information Technology
  • Serve as chief advocate and spokesperson for the academic support provided by the Library and promote information literacy and librarianship within the University community
  • Oversee timely Library communications with the University community

Other Elements

  • Engage in on-going research and pursuit of grants and other external funding in collaboration with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
  • Manage searches for new Library faculty and staff.
  • Support the career trajectories of Library faculty and staff and make rank and tenure recommendations for the Library faculty
  • Provide formal performance evaluation for Library faculty and staff and manage all staff disciplinary action.
  • Participate actively in professional organizations in the fields of libraries and faculty and student enrichment and represent the University to local and national consortia.
  • Stay current on best practices and developments in the field of library and information science and library technology
  • Make presentations to institutional bodies such as Cabinet and the Board of Trustees
  • Serve on the Academic Council and President’s Council.
  • Undertake special projects as needed
