Benefactor Spotlight

The Maslow Family Foundation, The St. Alphonsus Society

Peter Cimbolic, Ph.D.; Sister Mary Jo Gallagher, IHM; Richard Kane; Sister Anne Munley, IHM, Ph.D.; Robert Schweitzer; Melanie Maslow Lumia; Allison Maslow; and Devorah Namm, Ph.D. at the Maslow Ribbon Cutting.

The “ultimate opportunity” is how Melanie Maslow Lumia described her family’s long-term loan of the Maslow Collection and their gift to create the Maslow Study Gallery for Contemporary Art at Marywood University.  Lumia listed the “beautiful place, wonderful people, and fantastic art program” as key factors in their decision.  Reflecting on the collection’s use as a teaching tool, she declared that her family “couldn’t ask for a better home.”

Noting the collection’s integration into the art curriculum, long-time Maslow Collection curator, Robert Sweitzer, affirmed that “the new Gallery provides a creative and responsive space for students to have a more personal and close up experience of important works of art that relate to a wide range of issues and interests.” Commenting on the new partnership, Sweitzer delightedly noted that this is a “natural, meaningful, and exciting new beginning for the Maslow Collection and Marywood.”

Richard Maslow at The Maslow Collection announcement

In recognition of the Maslow Family’s significant support of Marywood’s Art Program through the gift of the Maslow Gallery and long-term loan of the Maslow Collection, they were honored by being named as charter inductees of the St. Alphonsus Society.

The St. Alphonsus Society, named in memory of St. Alphonsus Liguori, a patron saint of the IHM Congregation and of Marywood University, honors the University’s most faithful benefactors, who have made significant lifetime commitments to Marywood.
