What’s New?

Dr. Walter Broughton, Associate Professor of Sociology, is teaching in China for the first half of his sabbatical. In the second semester, he will be traveling and observing in several other Asian nations, including Thailand and India.

Welcome to our new Assistant Professor of History, Dr. Alexander Vari. Dr. Vari holds the doctorate from Brown University and comes to us from Forman University in Greenville, S.C.. As a European specialist, Dr. Vari will be teaching the core courses and advanced courses in European History and in his secondary field, Latin American history.

The Social Sciences Department, in collaboration with the Religious Studies Departments at Marywood and at the University of Scranton will be sponsoring Interdependence Day on Wednesday, September 12. Marywood’s observance is focused on Darfur, with a day-long series of events highlighting the tragedy. At 7 p.m. the film Darfur Diaries will be presented , introduced by the producer of the film, Jan Marlowe. Ms. Marlowe will conduct a discussion of the film after its showing. The event will take place in the Lynett Multimedia Room, Learning Resource Center.

On Monday, September 17, Dr. Thomas Jackson, Associate Professor of Political Science, will present Marywood’s Constitution Day event. His talk is entitled, “The Constitution: A Trap to Catch a President.” The event will take place in the Multimedia Room, Learning Resources Center at 2 p.m.

Immediately after commencement in May, Sister Margaret Gannon and Dr. Erin Sadlack from the English department conducted a study tour to Oxford, England. Living at St. Clare’s College, students studied with the Marywood faculty in two courses: Europe in the Twentieth Century and Late Renaissance and Early Modern Writers. The study included three trips to London, including the Globe Theater and one trip to Blenheim Palace, focusing on locations of particular interest for the subjects being studied. Plans are underway for a return trip in late spring 2008.

From September 12 to 25, Sister Margaret will be traveling in East Africa to the nations of Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. She will be visiting the sites of instruction of the African Sisters Education Collaborative, a project shared with three other colleges and universities and the religious congregations that sponsor them. The goal of the Collaborative is to provide education to the hundreds of African sisters in need of college degrees. Sister Margaret will also be investigating the possibility of a  students’ service trip to Tanzania in the early summer of 2008.
