Social Sciences Department Alums

Alums of the department are distinguishing themselves all over the US in a variety of fields. They are practicing law throughout Pennsylvania and in many other locations nationwide. Jacqueline Conforti Barnett, for instance, represents the entire Pennsylvania State University system in certain of its contract negotiations. Peter Sweeney serves as Judge of the Civil Court of New York City. Others are practicing in state and local justice systems or in private practice.

Many of our alums have entered the educational field and support high school students in their developing love for history and the other social sciences. Keith Durkin entered higher education, serving as Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Sociology at Ohio Northern University.

Our alums serve in several areas of criminal justice including probation, incarceration, and law enforcement. Kate Lynott is Education Specialist for the Federal Judicial Center, training probation officers throughout the nation; John Bendzunas is an officer for the US Probation Service.

Some of our history alums have developed their careers in the research and museum areas, like Sara Hopkins, who is employed by the Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia. Others serve in administrative positions, like Mary Alice Jacquinot, IHM, a Vice President at Marian Community Hospital, and Susan Marino Shaffer, the Director of Corporate and Continuing Education at Keystone College. Others have chosen to serve in the armed forces like Anne Barlieb and Theresa McKiernan, putting their Marywood education to the service of the nation.

Approximately 60% of our alums go directly into careers in such fields as teaching, law, criminal justice, public service, and various corporate and private sector areas. Approximately 40% go on to further study in law, criminal justice, history, the social sciences, and other fields at a number of universities including Boston College, Johns Hopkins, Pennsylvania State University, University of Connecticut, Columbia University, University of Pittsburgh, Dickinson School of Law , Temple University, Case Western Reserve University Law School, Rutgers University, the College of William and Mary, and the London School of Economics.
