Alpha Psi Chapter
Explanation of Greek Letters
- Theta is the first letter of the Greek word Theos,
meaning God
- Alpha is the first letter of the Greek word Anthropos
signifying human being.
- Kappa is the first letter of the Greek word koinonia,
community.
The three areas of primary concern to students of
Religious Studies and Theology are God, the human being, and
community.
Purposes of the Society
The purposes of Theta Alpha Kappa are several:
- To bring students, teachers, and writers of Religious
Studies and Theology together both intellectually and
socially;
- To encourage excellence in the study of Religion and
Theology particularly at the undergraduate and graduate
levels by promoting excellence in research, learning,
teaching, and publication and by fostering an exchange of
thought among scholars;
- To promote friendship among its members, and to
inculcate in them a high degree of loyalty to each
other;
- To honor those who have shown excellence of
achievement and promise of continued growth in the
discipline of Religious Studies and Theology;
- To hold meetings and social gatherings for the better
realization of the above stated purposes.
Requirements
- Junior or senior standing as a student, that is,
completion of at least 60 approved credits toward
graduation
- An overall Q.P.A. of at least 3.0
- The completion of at least 12 credits in Religious
Studies
- A Q.P.A. of at least 3.5 in Religious Studies
- Declaration of intent to major or minor in Religious
Studies
- Standing within the top 35% of his/her class
Benefits
- Your membership will be an integral part of your
curriculum vitae for life; you can list it on your
application for graduate school or for employment.
- Membership fulfills one of the requirements for
entrance at the GS-7 rather than GS-5 level in numerous
professional and technical occupations in federal
service; that is, members can enter federal government
employ at a rating higher than other college
graduates.
- You will receive the Journal of Theta Alpha Kappa, an
attractive professionally done journal that appears twice
yearly in the spring and fall. To receive the Journal
beyond the first year after induction, your membership
must be kept active.
- You will have the opportunity to submit essays for
possible publication in the Journal, after as well as
before graduation. Non-members at schools where T.A.K.
chapters are established may also make submissions if
they are at that moment students or faculty members.
- You will be honored at a dinner and induction
ceremony held at Marywood and permitted to bring a guest
of your choice free of charge; you will be invited to
return as a guest of the Alpha Psi chapter the following
year after induction.
- You will receive a beautiful certificate suitable for
framing, attesting to your membership in Theta Alpha
Kappa, with your name inscribed by hand calligraphy.
- You will be able to purchase and wear the emblems of
membership available, including medallion, lapel pins,
necklace charms, and honor cords.
- You will be eligible to apply for the annual
undergraduate achievement awards and new annual
fellowship award.
- As long as you are a student you will be able to
compete yearly for the Albert Clark prize for the best
theology-religious studies paper. A 200 dollar award is
given for the best undergraduate paper and the same for
the finest graduate paper. Non-members at schools with
TAK chapters may also compete. Winning essays are
published.
- You will be invited to attend the national, yearly
meeting and reception held in conjunction with the
national convention of the American Academy of
Religion.
- You may make suggestions to the local chapter for
activities.
- You will have the opportunity to vote to elect
officers for the society on a national level, and run for
office yourself.
- You will have the opportunity to make contact with
and get to know other members of the society
nationally.
- Active members receive a newsletter
periodically.
