Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences

Family and Consumer Sciences/Home Economics was one of the first three programs to be offered at Marywood when the school was first incorporated in 1917.

Four themes which guide Marywood University are:

  • a focus on family issues
  • being on the cutting-edge in education
  • a commitment to service
  • a belief in the need to live responsibly in an interdependent world

At Marywood University, one academic program which is closely guided by these same themes is the Family and Consumer Sciences Education (K-12) program. This is an undergraduate program which leads to certification by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to teach at the elementary and secondary (K-12) level in the area of family and consumer sciences/home economics. In addition to receiving a certification to teach family and consumer sciences, a degree in this area also prepares a student for career opportunities in the areas of child care and development, adult education, cooperative extension, and as educational specialists in industry and business.

A certificate to teach family and consumer sciences/home economics in Pennsylvania specifically qualifies an individual to teach the following subject areas:

  • human development and family relations
  • child care and development
  • home management and consumer education
  • food and nutrition
  • housing and home furnishing
  • clothing and textiles maintenance and production.

Are there jobs available for individuals earning degrees in family and consumer sciences education?

This is a critical question which you should be considering before you select a program of studies at any college or university. Family and Consumer Sciences Education graduates with teaching certificates currently have a 100% job opportunity. While the number of job opportunities in Pennsylvania has increased, the number of family and consumer sciences education graduates has declined.

Chapter Four, the Pennsylvania State Board of Education’s Rules and Regulations which govern public school education in Pennsylvania specifically requires that every student at both the middle level (approximately 11-14 years of age) and the high school level receive planned instruction in family and consumer sciences.

Marywood University is one of only five colleges or universities in Pennsylvania to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in education and Pennsylvania teacher certification in family and consumer sciences education. Marywood University is the only college or university in Northeastern Pennsylvania to offer this program.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Education program is a comprehensive, integrated, experience-based program concerned with knowledge, skills, and processes used throughout the life span to help guide individuals and families in the most intimate and important areas of daily living. This program is located within Marywood University’s Nutrition and Dietetics Department.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Education program also works cooperatively with the Education Department at Marywood University. The program is substantially guided by the K-12 certification requirements outlined in the program requirements and the curriculum requirements of the Education Department at Marywood and as approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
