
Many outstanding leaders and professionals in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics attended Marywood University. Here are just a few examples.
Keith J. O'Neill
Class of 1976 (Coordinated Program in Nutrition & Dietetics & Bachelor of Science )Keith was the first male graduate of Marywood's Nutrition and Dietetics department. He is currently the President of Culinary Solutions, a division of Morrison Management Specialists in Memphis, Tennessee. His division works with foodservice operation and management for hospitals.
Prior to becoming President of Culinary Solutions, Keith was the food service director of Baptist Memorial Hospital. After working there for six years he started his own company, which he later sold to Morrison and assumed his current position.
In his own words, "Marywood gave me the skills and confidence to take on the challenges that come from running a large food service department and eventually from the challenges created by starting my own company."
Anita Vangarelli Owen
Class of 1958 (Didactic Program in Nutrition & Dietetics & Bachelor of Science)Anita currently works at the Arizona Department of Health Services where she is Executive Advisor to the Office Chief of Nutrition and Chronic Disease Prevention Services.
Her Dietitian and Nutrition career spanned different worlds. First in Public Health Nutrition when she was Chief of Nutrition/State of Arizona and had the distinction of starting the first WIC program for the nation. Anita's next career move was with industry where she worked with Nabisco Brands building their healthy foods market, and then she was Senior Vice President of the National Dairy Council. Other positions Anita has had included Nutrition Advisor to Public Relations Specialists throughout the country.
Anita currently serves on the Board of Overseers at Tufts University and enjoyed nine years on the Board of Trustees at Marywood University.
She says of Marywood University, "Marywood taught us to be nuturing, caring and to have the integrity as a person and as a professional. Marywood University is a wonderful place to learn basic values that have been a part of my professional and personal life."
Jeanene Fogli
Class of 1998 (Master of Science in Nutrition & Internship)Jeanene Fogli, RD, PhD
Director, Endocrinology, Metabolic Disease and Cardiology
Dr. Fogli is a registered and licensed dietician, who was most recently Instructor in the Department of Translational Research of Harvard Medical School. She was also Chief Bionutritionist at the General Clinical Research Centre (GCRC), Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, in Boston, MA for seven years. She received a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry and Human Metabolism from the School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. As a bionutritionist, her responsibility was to engage in collaborative scientific efforts, and provide expertise in nutritional biochemistry, metabolism, and anthropometry.
She was a "Recognized Dietitian of the Year" recipient from Massachusetts in 2002. Not only is Jeanene an outstanding Dietitian, she is also a marathon runner.
She credits her professors and the various academic faculties for much of her success in the field and for being excellent mentors and Dietitians.
Lieutenant Colonel Lorriane Rupp Breen
Class of 1978 (Coordinated Program in Nutrition & Dietetics & Bachelor of Science)Lieutenant Colonel Breen is serving in the United States Army Medical Specialist Corps. In June of 2003, she will be the first Marywood graduate to Command an Army Medical Recruiting Battalion. She says, "Leadership, selfless service, and moral behavior are all values and traits developed and reinforced while I was a student at Marywood, and they have contributed to my success today."
Catherine Marson DeAngelis
Class of 1987 (Coordinated Program in Nutrition & Dietetics & Bachelor of Science)Catherine has been employed at Women Infants and Children (WIC) for the past nine years. Prior to working at WIC she worked at the Middletown Psychiatric Center in the Alcohol Treatment Center as a Dietitian.
Catherine states, " ... I have enjoyed working in both the clinical and community areas. In the Dietetics field there are different areas in which you can choose to focus in on and I feel that my Marywood education fully prepared me to work effectively in many positions. In my line of work we have to take Civil Service tests for promotion and I have done excellently on each of them. I credit my education for this. I also passed the Registration exam on my first try, which I also contribute to my Marywood education."
David Knorek
Class of 2002 (Coordinated Program in Nutrition & Dietetics & Bachelor of Science)David is currently working on his post-bacculaureate premed coursework to finish his requirements for medical school at Wilkes University. He is currently awaiting interviews from several medical schools, including University of Pennsylvania, Syracuse Upstate, and Penn State - Hershey.
In addition to preparing to go to medical school, David works in Hazeleton as a Dietitian and observes at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital in Neurosurgery, Pathology lab, Oncology, and Gastrology with the doctors and surgeons. He has also been recently accepted as a professional member of the American Diabetes Association.
Sandra Magera
Class of 1999 (Coordinated Program in Nutrition and Dietetics & Master of Science in Nutrition)
Sandra is an outpatient Dietitian at the Tuba City Regional Healthcare Corporation Hospital, Tuba City, Arizona, which serves three Native American tribes - the Navajo, Hopi, and the Southern Paiute. She has been stationed there as a Commissioned Corps Officer for the past two years.
She says, "Attending Marywood and participating in these academic programs enabled me to join the workforce earlier than competing Universities I researched. I found the faculty at Marywood to be dedicated Nutrition experts who were helpful in every way I needed."
Heather Howard
Class of 1999 (Internship), Master of Science in Nutrition 2000Heather is currently a Clinical Dietitian for ARAMARK at Paoli Memorial Hospital in Paoli, Pennsylvania. She says, "After completing the Dietetic Internship with combined Masters degree, I felt extremely prepared starting my job as a Clinical Dietitian. Marywood provided me with hands on experiences and a great education from highly qualified and caring professors."
Shering Horning
Class of 2002 (Internship & Master of Science in Nutrition)Sheri is currently a Clinical Dietitian at Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando, Florida. She has recently pasted the RD exam and credits the Internship program for preparing her for the exam and for her success in the field.
Nikki Carlo
Class of 2002 (Didactic Program in Nutrition & Dietetics & Bachelor of Science)Nikki is currently completing her Dietetic Internship at CW Post University in Long Island, NY as well as working on her Masters degree with a concentration in Eating Disorders. In her internship she has had the opportunity to work with the Toronto Blue Jays as well as nutritionally analyze the Turbo Cooker's meals and did a health fair at the Jacob Javitz Center and Morgan Stanley in New York City.
Nikki states, "I definitely and strongly feel, I would not be able to accomplish all that without the background of Marywood's Nutrition Program. I developed the confidence, skills, and education that has given me a solid foundation which has allowed me to excel and continue to do well in my nutrition career."
