PROCEDURE

Students are admitted to Marywood University for the B.S.N. degree according to current admission procedures. Students must meet with the Department Chair to plan their academic program and challenge schedule.

The Nursing Program is responsible for assuring the student meets the criteria for awarding of advanced standing credits.

The Chairperson of the Nursing Program will send a memo to the Registrar for each individual RN, listing the credits to be awarded; the Registrar will authorize their placement on the student's transcript.

Any questions about the application of the above policy should be referred to the Registrar.

2. CREDIT BY CHALLENGE AWARDING FOR SELECTED NURSING COURSES

For RN students who graduate from an NLN accredited program OVER 10 YEARS ago, the challenge examination set must be taken. *

Based on careful evaluation of the course goals, the faculty has decided to use the NLN ACE II RN to BSN consisting of three tests: Care of the Adult, Care of the Childbearing/Care of the Child and Care of Client with Mental Disorder to validate nursing knowledge at Level II and III. A decision score of 85 is used as a cut-off score on each of the tests.

If the student does not achieve a decision score of 85 in either both the Pediatric and Obstetrical Nursing portions of the ACE II (Care of Client During Childbearing and Care of the Child) test, s/he will take N310, Nursing Care of the Childbearing/Childrearing Family, 8 credits.

If the student does not achieve a decision score of 85 in the ACE II (Care of the Adult) test, the student will take N311, 7 credits and N430, 5 credits.

If the student does not achieve a decision score of 85 in the ACE II (Care of the Client with a Mental Disorder) test, the student will take N431, 4 credits.

A student then receives credit by examination for N202, N208, N210, N301, N457, N310, N311, N430, N431 (38 credits). Thirty-eight credits will be held in escrow until successful completion of the two-credit Nursing 201 Nursing Concepts course. Student will then be awarded 38 challenge credits, to be displayed on the Marywood University transcript as follows:

Challenge of Other University Courses

Registered nurses who did not obtain University credit for their course work in anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, and nutrition may elect to take these courses to validate their knowledge through successful completion of NLN achievement tests. A score of the 40th percentile (baccalaureate norms) is considered successful.

Credits are awarded after testing as follows:

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

8 CREDITS (NLN)

MICROBIOLOGY

4 CREDITS (NLN)

CHEMISTRY

4 CREDITS (CLEP)

NUTRITION

3 CREDITS (NLN)

In addition, there are a variety of CLEP tests available to Marywood University. Students are encouraged to speak with their advisor about these.

A total of 57 credits by challenge exam are possible as outlined above.

*With evidence of continued employment as a Registered Nurse, the department will consider awarding credit without challenging. International students holding current licensure from their own country will be evaluated individually and may be required to complete the validation process.
