Degree-Equivalency in Music Therapy Certificate Program
Candidates for Degree-Equivalency hold a bachelor's degree in music and seek board certification for professional practice as a music therapist.

This program consists of core music therapy/clinical training requirements, plus courses in related fields (e.g., abnormal psychology). Degree-Equivalency is regarded as entry level, regardless of level of credit awarded for course work. Students earn undergraduate credit for Degree-Equivalency courses.

Prior to beginning the program, the music therapy director designs a course of study with the student resulting in entry-level competencies in three areas: musical, clinical, music therapy foundations and principles (AMTA Professional Competencies). Academic academic transcripts (for initial degree plus music therapy courses) must meet the required competency-based standards.

The equivalency program in music therapy requires a minimum of three semesters or one and a half years, plus minimum 1200 internship hours. The internship follows completion of the core music therapy course work. Upon successful completion of academic and clinical components, candidates are eligible to take the National Board Certification Examination for Music Therapists (CBMT). The credential awarded is Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC). Professional membership is available with the American Music Therapy Association, Inc. (AMTA).

Undeclared Major with an Interest in Music
Students undecided about a major field of study or who do not meet admission standards of the desired major at the time of admission will be categorized as Undeclared.

Undeclared status may be given as a result of combined SAT math/reading score of less than 970 for an incoming Freshman wishing to major in music education, a grade point average of less than 3.0 for an incoming transfer student. Undeclared status is not a major, and students cannot receive a degree in this category. It is advisable for students to declare a major early in the university experience. First year students should declare a major by the completion of 32 credits or the end of first year. Transfer students should declare a major by the completion of 16 Marywood credits.
