Community Outreach
Marywood Children's Choir Program has been developed to complement school music programs and church choirs and to provide opportunity for gifted students to study and perform under professional direction. The Children's Choir is truly a special setting; a place to develop friendships, and to use the marvelous talent of the voice to take part in an activity that can enrich a child for a lifetime. This choir is open by audition to students in grades 3 - 6. Weekly rehearsals are held on campus from September to May (Monday evenings 4:45-6:30pm). The choir performs in a winter/Christmas and spring concert annually. Other performances are planned as the year progresses. For more information on the program or to schedule an audition, contact Sr. Joan Paskert at (570) 348-6268 ext. 2536 or e-mail paskert@es.marywood.edu Camp Vivace: Pre-Collegiate Summer Music Camp - additional info at Camp Vivace Web site Camp Vivace, The Marywood University Summer Music Camp, is a 2-week summer program open to high school and pre-college students in grades 7-12. Each honors festival is held at Marywood on a consecutive Friday and Saturday during the academic year (late fall for Band; early spring for Orchestra). The two-day program consists of sectional coaching, full ensemble rehearsals, and culminates in a concert on Saturday evening. Honors Band: Approximate 170-180 students participate in the band festival each year. Students are recommended by their school music director and final selections determined by the festival conductor. Informal seating auditions are held the first day of the festival with area school band teachers serving as adjudicators. For information about Honors Band, contact Sr. Joan McCusker at (570) 348-6268 ext. 2531 or email mccusker@es.marywood.edu Honors Orchestra: Approximately six students are selected by each school's music director to participate. Students are assessed by the sectional coaches during the first rehearsal and seating is assigned thereafter. Music faculty members Sophie Till (violin/viola) and Christiane Appenheimer-Vaida (cello/double bass) coach sectional rehearsals. During the two-day festival, students and teachers also participate in exciting music workshops (e.g., Alexander Technique, Musicianship Skills/Performance Techniques for Student Musicians). This program provides music leisure activities for adolescents and young adults with intellectual developmental disabilities. Students take small-group lessons in violin, viola, cello and double bass, participate in ensemble rehearsals, and perform in concerts. String Project participants are divided into three levels based on student playing experience. The String Project also serves as a teaching and pedagogical lab experience for University string majors and music education majors who, under the supervision of Marywood music faculty members, serve as student assistants in the program. Marywood University is one of twenty-four universities participating in the National String Project Consortium. Approximately 100 students enroll in String Project each year.
