STUDENTS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Go Global!
The December 2006 cover of Time Magazine, "How to Build a Student for the
21st Century" highlights America’s urgent need to prepare students
who are "…global trade literate, sensitive to foreign cultures, conversant in different
languages…" Therefore the immediate goals of the Foreign Language department at
Marywood are for students to:- Understand and communicate in another language
- Appreciate and respect other languages and cultures
- Develop a world consciousness which fosters social concern for others
These goals have been the goals of Marywood’s Department of Foreign Language
since its inception. The significance of foreign language study in a liberal arts education
is reinforced by a six credit foreign language component to Marywood’s undergraduate
core curriculum. Marywood stands among
a minority of liberal arts institutions that have maintained a foreign language requirement
for all undergraduates. Marywood has never wavered in this commitment since its
founding in 1915.
