STRUCTURE OF LINGUISTICS (ENGL. 400)

COURSE OUTLINE

Textbook:

An Introduction to Language (Seventh Edition) by Victoria Fromkin, Nina Hyas, and Robert Rodman. (Published by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston)

Tests and Examinations:
On Friday of each week there will be a brief objective quiz (with a multiple-choice format) related to the week's readings, lectures, discussions, etc. The final exam will take place according to the University's exam schedule.

Oral Presentation:
Oral presentations by three-student teams will be given throughout the semester on Wednesday afternoons. These should be approximately fifteen minutes long. Dates and topics will be selected early in the semester. The focus of these presentations will be on issues related to language.

Final Grade:
Utilizing Marywood University's grading scale, your final grade for this course will be determined as follows: Weekly quizzes=25%; Mid-term and Final exams=25%; Oral Presentation=25%; Class Participation=25%.

Policies:
Regular attendance is extremely important. Intelligent, positive class participation is expected. Please bring your textbook and notebook to each class session. Tardiness is not permitted; repeated lateness and/or unexcused absences will lower your grade. Please complete reading assignments on time so that you will be fully prepared for class discussions, quizzes, and other classwork.

Course Overview:
The study of the Structure of Linguistics is the study of all components of human language-both oral and written-that make communication possible. Units of sound, meaning, form, syntax, and other elements of language will be examined. Comparative linguistics, patterning of sentences, dialects, slang, the development of words, animal communication, language acquisition, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, and other topics will be analyzed, along with the social and psychological aspects of language. This course will better prepare us to live responsibly in our interdependent world.
