The Barbara Hoffman English 160 Award

The Barbara Hoffman English 160 Award is named in honor of Barbara Hoffman, a professor of English at Marywood University. It is awarded to first-year English 160 students for excellence in library research and writing.

Eligibility:
Any student enrolled in English 160 during the Fall Semester is eligible to enter. Papers must be nominated by the instructor. Up to two nominations per section will be accepted.

Guidelines:

  • The paper must be a minimum of five pages, exclusive of notes and bibliography
  • The paper must meet all requirements imposed by the instructor, and include the following criteria:
    • Quality writing style
    • Error-free prose and bibliography
    • Good sources
    • Well-developed sense of audience and purpose
  • The paper must include a library research component

The paper will be judged on the quality of the library research as well as the quality of the writing

Submissions:

  • Instructors must drop off essays at the University Post Office between October 16 and December 22.
  • Attach a cover sheet that lists the student's name, the instructor's name, the student's e-mail address, and the student's phone number. The student's name should appear on the cover sheet ONLY.
  • Double-spaced submissions must be typed in 12-point Times New Roman. Include a permission statement authorizing publication of the paper following the completion of the competition.

Judging:

  • The papers will be judged anonymously by faculty representing the Library and the English Department. Judging will take place in the early part of the Spring Semester.
  • Papers will not be returned. Students should keep an electronic copy of their work as they may be asked to submit the electronic version for publication.

Awards:
First, second, and third place awards will be given. Winners will be notified by March 1 of the Spring Semester. A reception honoring the winners and all participants will be held during National Library Week in April. Cash prizes ($75, $50, and $25 for 1st, 2nd, 3rd places) as well as certificates will be distributed during the reception. The instructor who submits the first-place winner will also be honored.

Failure to comply to these guidelines may result in disqualification.
