Activities The English Department invites students to participate in several organizations and a variety of activities. English majors submit work to--and publish--Bayleaf, our literary/arts magazine, and write articles for The Wood Word, the campus newspaper. They also often share their creative work with each other through the Live Poets Society. Beta Lambda, our chapter of Lambda Iota Tau, International Honor Society for Students of Literature, sponsors trips to theatrical productions every October, runs a Book Swap each semester, and each April hosts a social for faculty and students. The department frequently brings poets and writers to campus for readings and classroom visits. English majors have the chance to present research papers at the Marywood Undergraduate Research Forum and at regional and national undergraduate research conferences. Honors English majors are required to write a thesis in one-on-one consultation with a faculty member, and their work appears in the annual Honors publication, Scientia. Other majors participate in Semester-at-Sea, in study abroad programs in places like Ireland and Spain, and in service trips to Guatemala and Costa Rica. Our graduates often pursue post-baccalaureate degrees at major research institutions. Others find well-paid employment in publishing, advertising, secondary teaching, and the corporate world. To give majors a head start in the work world, the department encourages internships in these and other areas. We keep in close contact with our alumni through our semiannual newsletter, Touchstones, and we invite graduates to return to campus to discuss their professional work during our annual Career Day for majors.
