1.  PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY – studies that provide an understanding of all aspects of professional functioning:

In addition to the broad professional identity issues contained in COUN 504 - Philosophical Foundations of Counseling, each of the three counseling programs at Marywood University has a course(s) that focuses on the content  related to Professional Identity.  For mental health counselors, the course is COUN 507 Principles and Practices of the Mental Health Counselor. In School Counseling programs, there are two courses. The first is COUN 546 Organization and Administration of Counseling Services. For the elementary school counselor the course is COUN 521 Counselor Education Seminar – Elementary and for secondary school counseling, the course is COUN 572 Counselor Education Seminar – Secondary. Other courses listed address this area in a secondary manner.

Summary: Counseling skills which comprise the Helping Relationship core area are an extremely important part of the Counseling Programs. Students are exposed to skill based material in a cumulative manner throughout the entire program which cumulates in the Practicum and Internship experience under supervision of both faculty and site supervisors. We strive to prepare our students to be both effective counselors and ethical practitioners.


6. GROUP WORK - studies that provide both theoretical and experiential understandings of group purpose, development, dynamics, counseling theories, group counseling methods and skills, and other group approaches, including all of the following:

After a basic introduction in COUN 504 - Philosophical Foundations of Counseling, COUN 543 - Group Process in Counseling is the primary course that focus on the content area of Group Work. Other areas applicable to this core area are presented in the Practicum and Internship experiences. The Group Supervision Seminar of both practicum and internship exposes students to a wide variety of additional group experience.

Summary: Students of Marywood University’s Counseling Programs are introduced early to basic concepts and structures of group counseling in COUN 504 - Philosophical Foundations of Counseling, and receive more in depth training and experience in  counseling theory, techniques and leadership skills in COUN 543 - Group Processes in Counseling.  In addition, practicum and internship experiences afford students additional applied experience.

Due to the number of faculty in the Counseling & Psychology Department, there are a substantial number of assessment courses available to counseling students either as part of their required coursework, or as electives.

COUN 561 Introduction to Psychological Testing is required of all three counseling program tracks; while PSY 562 Assessment of Adult Personality & Psychopathology, PSY 563 Socio-emotional Assessment of Children & Adolescents and PSY 562 Individual Intelligence Testing may be taken as electives by mental health counseling students.
