PORTFOLIO ENTRANCE
GUIDELINES
Once a prospective art major is accepted to matriculate at Marywood, he/she must submit a portfolio to the Art Department for admittance. It is strongly recommended that all art applicants visit the Visual Arts Center and Studio buildings and meet with the Chairperson and/or Program Coordinators.
1. PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS: Portfolios may be submitted in one of three formats:
1) actual art work; 2) slides - high quality; 3) Compact Disk (CD) - preferably MacIntosh compatible, either jpeg or pdf file format. Also, please submit an itemized descriptive hardcopy list of all portfolio pieces that addresses medium, size, concept, software, etc.
Portfolios should include original work only, reflecting the student’s visual experiences to date; projects completed during high school program course work, private lessons, and work done without supervision. The best way to compile a Portfolio is to select from a representative group of collected works--those works that demonstrate strength, depth, and range visual abilities including; drawing from direct observation, color and design sensibilities, technique, style, conceptualization and creativity. If possible, include works that demonstrate preparation for your chosen discipline.
Your Portfolio should consist of approximately 12-15 original works. A variety of medium is preferred which may include: pencil, pen and ink or charcoal drawings, paintings in oil, acrylic or watercolor, 3-dimensional work made from clay, wood, metal, foamcore, photography, printmaking, computer graphics, drafting and other medium used as a vehicle for your creativity.
2. ESSAY REQUIREMENT: In addition to the portfolio, students must write and submit an original essay, approximately 250 – 300 words that describes their goals and how those goals relate to their chosen discipline. Please include a hardcopy of the essay with the portfolio.
Portfolios will not be returned by mail but may be picked up from the Art Department within 10 days of submission. Slide Portfolios will be returned by mail – please include a padded, stamped, self-addressed envelope.
IF YOU ARE SUBMITTING YOUR PORTFOLIO FOR ART TALENT AWARD CONSIDERATION, YOU MUST STATE YOUR INTENTIONS IN WRITING.
