One of the most challenging aspects of clinical work with children and adolescents is working with resistant and difficult parents. Not only are youth commonly either neutral or opposed to the notion of working with a mental health professional but clinicians must also cope with the resistance offered by birth parents, stepparents, and other responsible adults in the system. This intensive, fast-paced seminar can help you to design your assessment and intervention strategies to maximize adherence and help you to expand your repertoire for responding to resistance on multiple fronts. The outcome literature is clear that a plethora of effective assessment and intervention strategies are available to mental health professionals who wish to alleviate the most common mental health conditions in children and teenagers. However, getting the identified client, the family and the supporting systems to cooperate with the administration of these applications can be challenging, confusing and frustrating. Seminar participants will receive an overview of recommended assessment, treatment planning and intervention strategies with the most common externalizing and internalizing disorders in children and teenagers. A key component of this workshop is realizing the central goal of maximizing the odds to facilitate a collaborative working relationship with parents and youth alike.
