Institutional Animal Care and Use CommitteePurpose & Function:
The purpose of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is to assure that the institution's animal program, procedures, and facilities adhere to all applicable laws, regulations and policies governing the use of animals in research. The IACUC oversees the welfare of all animals used in teaching, testing, and research projects, including invertebrates and those not explicitly covered by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) or the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy. The IACUC follows the committee guidance provided in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (NRC, latest edition), specifically for overall animal program management, animal welfare, ethics, training, and occupational health and safety for personnel.
Membership & Selection:
IACUC members are appointed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs on the recommendation of the IACUC Chair. Appointments to the IACUC will be made such that the composition of the IACUC meets all pertinent regulations as discussed in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
Appointment to the IACUC is for a term of two years, reviewed annually by the IACUC chair.
There are at least six members with various backgrounds and fields of expertise, including, at least:
one representative from outside the University
Assistant Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs
The non-voting Director of Research Compliance staffs the committee.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs appoints members, with a view to ensuring cultural, professional, and academic diversity. Membership is contingent on year-round availability. The Vice President for Academic Affairs also appoints the Chair.Term:
An appointed member’s term is two years, with the possibility of reappointment for an additional term. In order to ensure the availability of a veterinarian to the IACUC, the veterinarian member is not limited to a two-year term.Meetings:
