Meetings

Accomplishments

At the beginning of the academic year, a number of items were put on the agenda for review for the upcoming year. The following are the main objectives put forth and executed by the committee:

  1. Plan and execute an Earth Day program as part of the Arboretum mission to educate.

  2. Conduct an Arboretum logo contest open to the entire University community. A $250.00 dollar prize in the form of a gift card to “Best Buy” would be awarded to the contest winner. The design would be used for the Earth Day buttons and magnets given out on the day of the picnic/program.

  3. Apply for a grant to help fund the growth of the Arboretum from the Overlook Estate Foundation. The purpose of this grant would be to design a new walking tour map/brochure to coincide with the new updated kiosk maps. Our grant request for $2,175.00 was approved by Overlook and received in January ’06. The graphic design department with the help of the arboretum committee finalized the layout and design and sent to print this past May.

As part of the Arboretum’s mission to educate, the committee planned an Earth Day program to include a picnic, environmental speakers, poetry readings and a raptor (birds of prey) presentation.

The program was held on Thursday, April 20th on the Memorial Commons. The picnic and program was a collaborative effort between the Arboretum Committee and Pugwash, Marywood’s student environmental club. The picnic and program were well attended. An estimated 200+ people attended over the course of the two-hour program.

The program consisted of free food and refreshments throughout the program. There was the announcement and award of the “Best Buy” gift card to Corie Meck for her winning logo entry. Marywood faculty, Dr. Clymer and Dr. Hokien discussed their environmental research projects they are currently working on. There were poetry readings by International students recited in their own native languages about environmental conditions in their countries, which were then translated into English. The outdoor program on the Commons wrapped up with a Drum Circle by Marywood’s Music department.

Later that afternoon Jan Rethorst of the Delaware Valley Raptor Center held a raptor presentation indoors in the Fireplace Lounge. The Center’s mission is to rehabilitate injured birds of prey with the goal of releasing them back into the wild. For the demonstration Jan brought with her two kinds of owls, a hawk, a falcon and a Bald Eagle. The presentation was very informative for all who attended.
