Activities with residents at Our Lady of Peace (OLP)

Programs are coordinated with the activities director at OLP for students to visit with retired IHM Sisters at Our Lady of Peace Residence, located on Marywood's campus.   If you enjoy working with older adults, providing companionship, and learning from them, consider volunteering here!  There are opportunities to volunteer one-on-one or in small groups.  The following is a sampling of the types of activities from which you could choose.

One-On-One & Small Group Opportunities

  • Meet with one of the residents to help teach basic computer skills; one hour per week or every other week according to your schedule
  • Assist with recreational activities with a small group of residents with dementia, one hour per week in the afternoon.  The activities and group interaction help keep the residents active and work on basic skills.
  • Spanish Speakers: Be a conversation partner for one of the Spanish-speaking residents; meet for friendly conversation one evening per week
  • Musicians: Do you play an instrument?  The Sisters love to gather to enjoy listening to music. Consider playing your instrument for a small group, perhaps on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, once per month
  • Wii Players: Join the Sisters for some gaming!  Assist the Sisters with a variety of sports games on their Wii - Bowling, Tenning, Golf, Baseball, or Boxing!
  • Artists: Join Sisters and share your love of art with them!  Most art supplies are available at OLP to facilitate short art sessions, such as water color painting or drawing.
  • Bingo Enthusiasts: Assist with Bingo games once per month on a Saturday afternoon, 2PM-4PM.  Who doesn't love a good game of Bingo!
  • Book Lovers:  Join residents of OLP to start a book club; read and meet once weekly to share and converse about the chosen book.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities and want to volunteer at OLP, contact the following Campus Ministry Student Leader: Rachel Hoyt

Volunteer Applications are available in the Campus Ministry Office, Swartz Center for Spiritual Life.
