Fall / Halloween Festival

Children, ages 4 yr - 8 yr old, who participate in programs sponsored by local social service agencies are invited on campus for an evening of fun Halloween-themed activities such as Pumpkin picking from our very own "Pumpkin Patch", pumpkin decorating, games, activities, and food.  Volunteers are needed to help set up, facilitate activities, partner with children throughout the evening, and clean up.  All are encouraged to dress in a Halloween costume!  The 2009 Fall/Halloween Festival will take place on Friday, October 30th, 4PM-7PM.

SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER AT THIS EVENT on Monday, Sept 28th at 9PM at the Volunteers In Action Student Service Club Meeting in the Fireplace Lounge.  At least 100 volunteers are needed to partner with (as a 'buddy') the children who attend the event; Additional volunteers are needed to help at the Registration and Food Tables.  In advance of the event, volunteers are needed to help make awesome decorations to transform the Latour Room into the Fall/Halloween Festival!

KIDSTUFF

KIDSTUFF is Campus Ministry's annual mini-carnival that offers 4 yr-8 yr old children who are served by local agencies such as United Neighborhood Centers and Friends of the Poor to come to campus for an afternoon of games, activities, entertainment and food. This annual event, now in its 17th year, is planned and faciliated by a team of 20 students; in addition, nearly 25 student clubs and organizations sponsor the games and activities, and up to 100 student volunteers assist with food and pair up with the children as their "friend" for the afternoon.   The application process for students interested in being part of the planning team takes place in the Fall semester; Volunteers & Clubs and Organizations who want to assist on the day of the event are recruited throughout the Spring semester.  KIDSTUFF 2010 will take place on Saturday, April 24th, 1PM-3PM.

Kiddy Kompanions

Students volunteer one hour per week interacting with children at the Fricchione Day Care Center on Campus. This program offers students the opportunity to assist teachers with daily activities with children of various ages from infant to elementary aged. Time commitment is flexible depending on student schedules, but should be one hour per week for at least one semester.

Tutoring

Volunteer tutors are needed to help meet the academic needs of elementary, middle-school, and high school aged community members. Tutors are needed for all subject areas, particularly math and science! All tutoring is done on campus and scheduled according to your availability. Stop into the Campus Ministry office, Swartz Center for Spiritual Life, to check out the tutor request binder and/or e-mail Campus Ministry to be added to the volunteer tutor e-mail list. You'll receive periodic messages listing the most recent tutor requests.

Volunteers are needed to assist United Neighborhood Centers with Homework Help & SAT Prep Programs for their teen outreach programs.  Structured Homework Help volunteers should commit to at least one evening per week on aregular basis, between 6PM-8PM at either the Bellevue or Progressive Centers.  SAT Prep Program volunteers should plan to assist with the development of the program, as well as commit Friday evenings, 5PM-7PM, to facilitating the program between February - May.

Headstart & After-School Programs

Students intersted in an ongoing opportunity to assist with activity supervision in a structured, educational child care center in our local community could consider volunteering at one of the Scranton/Lackawanna County Head Start programs or at United Neighborhood Centers' Child Care Centers.  Students interested in volunteering should plan to commit at least 1-2 hours on a weekly basis throughout a minimum of one semester. These Centers run M-F between 7AM-6PM. Clearances and Background Checks are required to volunteer.

Story Hour

On a monthly basis, student volunteers share their love for reading and imagining with children served by Friends of the Poor.  Story Hour is an opportunity to gather with children for an afternoon of reading, craft activity and snack.  Typically scheduled on Friday afternoons, 3PM-5PM, volunteers meet children either at the community room of their housing development or host them at an on-campus location.  Fall programs include Sept 18th & Nov 13th at the Community Room at Valley View Housing Development; October 2nd with children from Jackson Terrace Housing Development and residents at Our Lady of Peace (OLP) at OLP; Dec 11th for children from both Valley View and Jackson Terrace for a holiday gathering on campus.
