This major is designed for students with a special interest in retailing. A combination of marketing and retailing courses provide students with the knowledge needed to enter an executive training program or positions in retail management, buying, product development, and visual merchandising.
The retail Industry and its various job titles employees a large majority of college graduates. Consider the fact that the billion dollar plus industry needs people in Management and Marketing, Advertising, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Visual Merchandising and a host of other positions. Retailing is a driving force in the domestic and global economy. Another key reason for studying Retail Business Management is that many students want to go on to become entrepreneurs one day and run their own businesses. This concentration,
which falls under the Marketing umbrella, is a great way to get started on learning aspects of beginning a start-up company of your own in the future.
One thing we know for certain... Retailing is everywhere!
Marywood offers a stong blend of business based course and a number of courses that must be satisfied by the students in the RBM concentration such as Retail Management, Buying Theories, Visual and a Survey of Visual Design and Display. Classes are not too large and students are given individual attention. The courses include filed trips and speakers to keep students abreast of the latest developments in the industry. Many opportunities to work in the field exist locally due to the proximity of three malls in Scranton alone, plus many Specialty Stores and Department Stores in the region.
All students also have the opportunity to become members of Net Impact: Students for Responsible Business, an International Professional Organization and club that gives students many ways to contribute responsibly to the business setting before and after graduation.
Numerous opportunities for internships and placement after graduation exist in our local area and around the country and the world. Our success rates for placement are high, attesting to the strong education and experiences students receive while studying at Marywood.
