Are you interested in earning your Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education in as little as 5 years? Do you want to be a more marketable interviewee by being certified in more than one area in the Education Field? Then Marywood University’s Education Department has a unique opportunity for you!

Marywood University’s Education Department is offering an exceptional program where students can earn their Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees with multiple certifications in as little as 5 years. According to Chris Fryer, Ed.D., the Chairperson for the Education Department, the five-year program offers students an excellent opportunity to receive 2 degrees in 5 years that includes enormous amounts of practical fieldwork in various field placements.

Typically, it takes students 4 years to earn their Bachelor’s Degree, and then another 2-3 years to earn their Master’s Degree. Additional time and energy is spent applying to graduate schools, filling out applications, obtaining letters of recommendation, and taking the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

Instead of taking extra time to earn 2 degrees, Marywood University’s 5-year program in the Education Department ultimately saves students time and expenses by offering more coursework, fieldwork, and experience in a shorter amount of time through their prestigious 5-year program. In addition to saving time and energy, students also do not have to take the GRE to be enrolled in this 5 year program. The students easily transition from the undergraduate phase of study to the graduate phase, given that they maintain the appropriate grade point average and stay on track with courses.

The Triple Certification Five-Year Program includes 3 certification areas. Teacher candidates earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood (Pre-Kindergarten – 4th grade) and Special Education (Pre-Kindergarten – 8th grade) and their Master’s Degree as a Reading Specialist (Kindergarten – 12th grade) in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program

This program is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Marywood offers state-to-state certification reciprocity in a majority of different states around the country. Graduates in this program are not only wanted by employers, but are sought after!

In addition to the multitude of other benefits, the 5 year program includes fieldwork opportunities every semester that they are involved in the program. By providing students with fieldwork experience early on in their college program, they are better prepared for student teaching and internships. Beginning in their freshman year, students are able to observe and student teach in a multitude of various settings, consisting of local school districts, private and charter schools, online education, early childhood/intervention centers, and numerous others.

The current students in the 5 year program at Marywood University are so passionate about their experiences that they wanted to share their opinions and thoughts. Below are only a few of the abundant positive comments that students have to say about the 5-year option in the Education Department:

Samantha Dunn: “The intense curriculum paired with the small classroom size allows for students to fully engage in the material. Also, students are able to gain real life experiences through being in the classroom every semester starting in freshman year.”

Kimberly Zimmer: “I was ecstatic when I heard about the new 5-year reading program. I love to read and I want to share that with my future students! I was so happy to find out that I could start to earn my Master’s Degree while working on my dual certification for early childhood and special education. I knew this would give me a head start because I would save time applying to grad schools and taking the GRE's!”

Kaitlyn McDonnell: “I chose the 5 year program because I felt that it would better prepare me for my future as an educator for our young children. [By] having this certification, I feel that it will be beneficial to me [when] finding a job after graduating from Marywood.”

Dr. Fryer believes Marywood University is has a unique opportunity for teacher candidates. She welcomes any prospective or current student who is interested in the five-year program to call her work phone number at 570-348-6211 extension 2138 or email her at csfryer@marywood.edu.
