New Faculty Members Announced

Marywood University deans, Lori E. Swanchak, Ph.D., interim dean for the College of Health and Human Services; Frances M. Zauhar, Ph.D., dean for the College of Arts and Sciences; and James J. Sullivan, M.ARCH, RA, AIA, dean for the College of Professional Studies, recently announced new faculty members for the 2019-2020 academic year. 

Micheline (Micki) Orlowsky, clinical coordinator for the Nutrition Master’s Internship Program at Marywood University. Ms. Orlowsky earned both her bachelor and master of science degrees in Nutrition from Marywood University. She completed her Dietetic Internship at Cedar Crest College. She currently serves as the Northeast Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics president-elect; serves on the Board of the PA Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Political Action Committee; and is the state volunteer chair for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics National Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo in Philadelphia this year. Her professional interests include health promotion and wellness, public health and policy, and nutrition education. 

Samuel R. Walker, instructor of practice in the Nutrition/Athletic Training/Exercise Science (NATES) department at Marywood University. Mr. Walker received his bachelor of science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and master of science degree in Sports Nutrition and Exercise Science. He is a registered dietitian nutritionist and nutrition counselor. His research interests include weight management, behavioral sciences, and human performance. Mr. Walker teaches undergraduate sports nutrition and culinary foods as well as a capstone class.

Joy Hughes, founding director of Marywood University’s new Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy (BSRT) Program, which is the only BSRT program in the region. She developed the new program’s curriculum, is overseeing its accreditation process, and is developing and maintaining relationships with medical facilities.

Since 2012, Ms. Hughes served as an assistant professor and director of clinical education for the respiratory therapy program at Harrisburg Area Community College. She had previously served that institution as an adjunct professor and clinical instructor, beginning in 2005. Additionally, her professional experience also includes service as interim program director of the respiratory therapy program at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology (Lancaster, PA) from 2011-2012 and as a respiratory care practitioner at Geisinger Holy Spirit Hospital (Camp Hill, PA) from 2004-2017.

Ms. Hughes holds a master of science in health administration degree (2016) and a bachelor of science in healthcare leadership degree (2012) from the University of St. Francis (Joliet, IL). She received her associate of science degree in respiratory therapy from Harrisburg Area Community College (Harrisburg, PA) in 2004. She is a certified respiratory therapist and a registered respiratory therapist, with specializations in both neonatal pediatric and adult critical care.

Ms. Hughes is the 2012 recipient of the Adjunct Excellence in Teaching Award from Harrisburg Area Community College. Her memberships include the Pennsylvania Society for Respiratory Care, American Association for Respiratory Care, the National Board for Respiratory Care, Lambda Beta National Honor Society for Respiratory Care (Faculty Member), Cumberland Perry Vo-Tech Health Career Advisory Committee, and the Harrisburg Area Community College Operations House and Faculty Cabinet.

Bassel Noumi, M.D., medical director for the Respiratory Therapy  program at Marywood University. Dr. Noumi is a board-certified internist and pulmonologist and is employed at Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton, Pa. He completed his pulmonary residency at Case Western University and became the chief fellow of Pulmonary and Critical Care at Case Western, Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Noumi has conducted and contributed in many different areas of research, including hemoglobin monitoring in assessing weaning failure, peripheral vascular resistance, and heart failure. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the American Thoracic Society, and the American College of Chest Physicians.


Robert (Bob) Hoffman, director of clinical education for Marywood’s Respiratory Therapy program, is a registered respiratory therapist and holds a bachelor of arts and master of business administration. He has vast experience in teaching, clinical, and administration in healthcare. Mr. Hoffman has recently retired from Wilkes Barre General Hospital, where he served as the vice president and chief nursing officer of patient care.  Prior to that, he served as the director of the Luzerne Community College Respiratory Therapy program for seven years. His interests include economics and astronomy.


Mary Ellen McCormick, instructor of practice in the Nursing Department at Marywood University, earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Villanova University and her master of science degree in nursing from Syracuse University. She is a certified nurse practitioner in Adult Geriatrics. Ms. McCormick has clinical experience in adult and geriatric settings, including transplant surgery, school health, rehabilitation for brain injury and trauma, and orthopedics. She brings previous teaching experience from Wilkes University. Her research interests include educational support and diversity in nursing education. 


Lisa Makhoul, clinical coordinator in the Physician Assistant program at Marywood University, attended Philadelphia University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences and earned her master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies in 2015. Ms. Makhoul’s clinical experience is in the area of internal medicine, and, most recently, outpatient psychiatry.  She also serves as a part-time preceptor to students. 


David Majiros, M.S., PA-C, instructor of practice in the Physician Assistant program at Marywood University, enlisted in the United States Air Force as a medic, and then earned his bachelor of science degree as a physician associate from the University of Oklahoma (USAF program), and his master of science degree in Sports Medicine from Chapman University. Mr. Majiros retired from the United States Air Force as a captain in 1991. As a physician assistant, Mr. Majiros has practiced in Family Medicine and Orthopaedics/Sports Medicine in upstate N.Y., and in southwestern Pennsylvania. He became a physician assistant educator in 2008 at Seton Hill University, Greensburg, Pa. He has continued as a lecturer at national Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam PANCE/PANRE review courses and is a member of AAPA (American Academy of Physician Assistants); PSPA (Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants; and PAOS (Physician Assistants in Orthopaedic Surgery). 


Lindsey Morton received her bachelor's degree in psychology from Bucknell University, her master’s degree in psychology from Villanova University, Pa.,  and her doctorate in social psychology from the University at Albany, SUNY. Dr. Morton has served as a visiting assistant professor in the Psychology Department at Union College for the past five years. 

Her research interests include: How self-regulation impacts healthy behaviors and how social influences predict self-regulatory success and failure. 

Dr. Morton’s teaching will include General Psychology, Experimental Psychology I & II, and Social Psychology (undergraduate and graduate). Additionally, she plans to become the faculty adviser for Psi Chi, the psychology honor society at Marywood University. 

Matthew Nice is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pa., in counselor education and supervision. He earned his master’s degree in Counselor Education PreK-12 from Marywood University. During his doctorate program, he worked as a school based counselor with middle and high school aged students in the Pittsburgh public school system. His research interests include cultural identity in emerging adulthood and school counselor college readiness. Mr. Nice will be teaching school counseling supervision, marriage and family counseling, and group counseling in Marywood University’s Counseling program. 

Christina Kulp, director of field education at Marywood University’s satellite social work program at DeSales/Lehigh Valley. She is a graduate of Marywood University’s School of Social Work master of social work program and is currently entering her second year as a doctor of social work student. Ms. Kulp has worked in the geriatric, nonprofit, and healthcare fields for more than 19 years. She is a licensed clinical social worker with post-graduate certificates in Gerontology and Palliative/End of Life Care. She is specialty credentialed in Advanced Hospice and Palliative Social Work through National Association of Social Workers (NASW). In addition to field coordination, she plans to teach courses in Research as well as Policy and Administration. 


Krista Wargo is transitioning from adjunct lecturer in the Department of Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science to instructor of practice in Laboratory Science in that department. Ms. Wargo earned her bachelor of science degree in biology from the University of Scranton, and her master of science degree in molecular biology from Lehigh University, Pa. Prior to her full-time status at Marywood University, Ms. Wargo held research and management positions in Analytical Biochemistry at Sanofi-Pasteur. At Marywood, she will be teaching laboratory sections of General Biology, General Microbiology, and Microbiology for the Healthcare Professional.

Paola Marrero Hernandez returned to Marywood in January 2019 after a hiatus of 2.5 years, during which time she taught at the Institute of Second Language Acquisition in San Juan and in the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Puerto Rico. Paola earned a bachelor of arts degree in modern languages, emphases in Italian and French,  from the University of Puerto Rico, and her master of arts degree in Italian Studies from Indiana University. She begins this fall in her full-time appointment as an assistant professor of practice, teaching courses in Spanish and Italian.


Lauren Esposito, tenure-track assistant professor of English in the Department of Communication, Language, and Literature. Prior to Marywood, she taught in the Department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition at Syracuse University. Dr. Esposito earned her bachelor of science degree in business management, her master of arts degree and  master of arts teaching degree in English, and doctoral degree in English, all from Stonybrook University. Her dissertation studies the usefulness of improvisational acting in the writing classroom. This fall, she will be teaching Improv for Professional Writers, Rhetoric and Persuasion, and the Honors Section of Composition and Rhetoric at Marywood University. 


Daniel Cosacchi, Ph.D., assistant professor of religious studies in the tenure track. Dr. Cosacchi earned his bachelor of arts degree in theology and philosophy from Fordham University, his master of theological studies from Boston College, and his doctorate in theology from Loyola University, Chicago.  His dissertation was on Catholic Social Teaching, war, and the environment. Prior to teaching at Marywood University, Dr. Cosacchi taught at the College of Mount Saint Vincent and at Fairfield University. In addition to teaching Modern Belief this fall, Dr. Cosacchi will also be teaching a course on Social Morality.  


Wendelin (Wendy) Brown, J.D., is an instructor in the Education department at Marywood University. Her area of specialization is in special education. She is also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Dr. Brown earned her Juris Doctorate from Penn State. She advocates for individuals with disabilities and special needs.


Sandra (Sandy) Pesavento, Ph.D., instructor in Early Childhood Education at Marywood University. She earned her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Wilkes University. She is certified in many areas, including Principal Certification and Elementary Education, to name a few. Dr. Pesavento has extensive experience teaching in higher education and teaching in K-12 settings.


Michelle Pannone, assistant professor in the School of Architecture at Marywood University. Her areas of specialization include Digital Fabrication and Design Thinking. Her professional degree is from Virginia Tech, and she earned an advanced degree from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.


Emily Pellicano, March, assistant professor in the School of Architecture at Marywood University. Her area of specialization is in Representation of Interiors. She holds two professional degrees in Interior Design and Architecture, and she is a licensed Architect in the State of New York.


Liyang Ding, instructor in the School of Architecture at Marywood University. His area of specialization is in Architectural History and Theory. He earned a master’s degree in Architecture and is a Ph.D. Candidate, both at the University of Pennsylvania.


Jeffery Richards, instructor in the School of Architecture at Marywood University. His area of specialization is in Advanced Building Design. He earned a master’s degree in Architecture at Yale University, and he is a licensed architect in the State of New York. Mr. Richards has considerable professional experience in prominent firms, most recently with the award-winning firm of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.
