Laura Niederer, senior Nutrition and Dietetics major, was recently awarded the Velmabelle Cornford Scholarship by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation. To be eligible for the award, students must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education accredited program, such as that at Marywood University.
The number of scholarships varies from year-to-year, each with a value range of between $500 to $10,000. Each application is reviewed by three members of the Foundation Scholarship Committee. Applications are scored based on scholarship, professional potential, and financial need. From the nearly 900 applications received, approximately 400 students are awarded a scholarship.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation is the largest provider of dietetic scholarships to deserving students at all levels of study. The foundation looks to keep pace with a growing pool of student applicants, providing opportunities at all levels of experiential learning and helping to build a qualified and diverse workforce.
Ms. Niederer is the president of “GetFruved,” a fruits and vegetables club that promotes nutrition wellness and stress management. Fruved, for short, is a nation-wide movement that originated as a USDA mini-grant intervention/control study at eight universities across the country. She is also the president of the honors program committee and is the former president of the Student Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Upon graduation, Ms. Niederer plans to apply for an internship, and she will sit for her registered dietician's exam. She looks forward to earning a doctoral degree in public health nutrition in the near future.
