Sustainable Pavilions Exhibit at Courthouse Square

Students from Marywood University’s School of Architecture will present three small temporary architectural pavilions from 5:00 to 8:00 on November 4th on Lackawanna County’s Courthouse Square in Scranton as part of the First Friday Scranton Art Walk. The third-year architecture students designed and constructed the pavilions using sustainable design and construction practices. By building their own architectural designs, the students get an opportunity to test the ideas they are researching in the classroom.

A goal of the project is to use materials that lessen the harm to the environment. In addition to researching environmentally responsible building products, the students also collected excess materials from local companies. Two of the materials the students found innovative uses for are the left over material from the manufacture of bathroom stall partitions from Scranton Products, Inc. and the vinyl sheet of a billboard advertisement from the sign company, King Outdoor.

The pavilions are sponsored in part by a grant from the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority (LHVA).

“We are very grateful to the LHVA for this financial award, as it will be used to directly support an important hands-on educational experience for our students,” said Greg Hunt, dean of the School of Architecture. “The results of which will be displayed to the public in the heart of downtown Scranton.”

The Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority has supported this project in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the National Park Service.
