Graduate Student Resources

Graduate students who have not yet been formally accepted into a graduate program should seek academic advisement from the Office of Advising and Retention. All graduate students may consult the Graduate Catalog on University policies and procedures, as well as services available to graduate students.

Each Marywood University matriculating graduate student is assigned an academic advisor to provide information and guidance in planning and completing an academic program. The primary purpose of academic advising is to provide effective guidance so that students can maximize the educational opportunities available at Marywood University and make critical decisions regarding education, career, and life goals. Graduate students must receive approval from their academic advisor before registering for courses.

Successful academic advising depends on the ability of the advisor and advisee to recognize the nature of the academic advising process, address specific components of academic advising, and together be responsible in the advising process. The faculty advisor can be an excellent resource to the graduate student. Potential topics for discussion between the advisor and the student, that may directly impact on the future academic and professional services of the student are:

  • Course of study plan development

  • Career planning and expectations

  • Departmental expectations of student

  • Student expectations of academic program

  • Adjustment to the graduate student role

  • Academic progress of student

  • Closure experience planning and preparation

  • Congruency of course load and other life roles

  • Assessment of personal and academic difficulties

  • Referral plan to resolve personal and academic difficulties

With these goals in mind, the following resources can help to answer questions about academic advising and to make the most of academic advising sessions:
