Shoebox to SaltboxA story of a city gal’s adjustment to rural PA life, as well as a young family’s love affair with an ageing colonial saltbox house, which they restored. It is a humorous account of Mary Beth Voda’s meeting the American Gothic neighbors, and of adjusting to country living, and it is a love story. “It is about the love my husband and I and our two small children develop with our 1860-era Colonial saltbox house,” she says. “We bought it because it was spacious and because it was all we could afford. As we tore it down to the studs and put it back together, we grew to love it as a member of the family.”

IconsMany people find the images of Byzantine iconography strange and oddly rendered; mysterious and remote. Sometimes it helps to have a guide who can speak to our questions and lead us into a deeper understanding of what we’ve encountered. Rev. Peter Pearson is an expert in the field of Eastern Iconography. He’s been painting icons for 43 years and teaching others to paint for over 25 years. He will speak about gestures, colors, vesture, and styles, as well as the hidden, spiritual meanings. Join us for a couple of hours to go deeper into the world of Byzantine iconography.

Judaism 201In previous classes we have looked at different elements of Judaism, often seeing parallels or contrasts with other religions during discussions. In this class, Rabbi Joseph Mendelsohn will delve more deeply into these comparisons, looking at history, etymology as well as theology, to flesh out differences and commonalities. (Once again, this course falls under the category of “Stump the Rabbi.”) Judaism 101 is not a prerequisite for this course.

A Renaissance Queen’s LettersMary Tudor Brandon, the younger sister of the infamous Henry VIII, helped make peace by marrying a sickly king three times her age. But when he died after only two months, Mary astonished the early modern world by defying custom (and her powerful older brother) by choosing her own second husband and marrying him in secret. This class will explore the politics of sixteenth-century queenship by looking at Mary’s life through the lens of period documents, especially the remarkable letters she wrote to persuade her brother to honor her choice.

Ezra had already served the Union earlier in the Civil War; in 1864 he re-enlisted in late spring of that year. His company was sent into the South, and within a month of his arrival he was captured by the Confederates. Ezra would spend the duration of the Civil War in hell; Andersonville Prison, Georgia. It was a terrible ordeal, and Ezra would need to rely on his wits and talents if he wanted to live and return home to Scranton, PA.
