Whether you're interested in a career built on a background in health and physical education -- or simply want to put into practice the old adage, "sound mind, sound body," you'll find what you need in Marywood's Health and Physical Education program. All students are required to take two credits in the department, and many elect to take additional courses or participate in sports for fun and challenge. If you decide to major in Health and Physical Education, you'll have a choice of three programs: Athletic Training, Teacher Education or Physical Activity. Whatever you choose, you'll develop an awareness of the relationship of health to all experiences and activities; become aware of the cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects of fitness; acquire skills to be reasonably safe in or on or about the water; and learn to create experiences which will promote health and physical development. FacultyYou'll find the faculty in the Health and Physical Education Department are committed to helping students make the most of their Marywood education and prepare for rewarding careers. Faculty teach the courses, advise on course selection, help students develop their career plans, and still find time to keep up with advances in the field.
Martin Donahue, Ph.D., ATC, LAT, Chairperson Facilities and TechnologyStudents at Marywood, whether they major in health and physical education or participate in sports for personal challenge, have access to a wide array of athletic facilities. You'll find a gym, aerobics room, racquetball courts, a weight room, pool, tennis courts and new, expanded playing fields. In addition to the facilities for sports participation, you'll find a well-equipped Athletic Training room which allows students in the Athletic Training program to gain experience in the use of whirlpool, ultrasound, electric stimulation, and orthotron.
The Regional Advantage: Putting Knowledge to WorkYou'll find a wealth of opportunities to put theory into practice in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre region. Students in the physical activity program enjoy various settings for their practica: the YMCA, Red Barons Triple A baseball, local resorts, wellness centers, fitness centers and university athletic departments. Athletic Training students do clinical affiliations on campus as well as at local universities, junior colleges, and high schools. In addition, those students preparing for teacher certification will find plenty of opportunities for formal field experience and student teaching in the local school systems.Requirements of the Program All Marywood students are required to earn two credits in physical education, one in aquatics and one in the basic physical education area (which includes courses such as aerobic dance, body toning, bowling, field hockey, karate, racquetball, tennis and volleyball).
