History and Mission

Marywood is an independent, coeducational, Catholic institution committed to the integration of liberal arts and professional studies in the context of ethical and religious values. Founded in 1915 by the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Marywood now enrolls more than 3,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. From 1919, when the Unviversity welcomed its first international students, to the present, Marywood has always been proud of its membership in the global community and its capacity to promote well-being among all people.

Location and Climate

Marywood University, Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States of America, is located (latitude 41 degrees north, longitude 75 degrees west) in the northeastern section of Pennsylvania, near the scenic Pocono Mountains. Scranton experiences a full four-season climate with average summer temperatures, June through August, between 15 degrees Celcius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) and 27 degrees Celcius (80 degrees Fahrenheit) and average winter temperatures, December through February, between -6 degrees Celcius (20 degrees Fahrenheit) and 2 degrees Celcius (35 degrees Fahrenheit).

Marywood's 115-acre (46.54 Hectares) campus is situated in a safe, residential neighborhood. Students enjoy sports, special events, music, theatre, art and parks in this hospitable community, located 193 km (120 miles) west of New York City and 185 km (115 miles) north of Philadelphia. Marywood is easily accessible by automobile, bus and air. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport is just a ten minute ride from Marywood's campus.

Enrollment

Over 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students from 25 states and 21 countries are enrolled at Marywood. The student/faculty ratio on the undergraduate level is 12 to 1.

Academic Year

The academic year is divided into two semesters: fall semester, from late August through December, and spring semester, from January through May. Courses are also offered in two summer sessions from May until early August. A candidate for a baccalaureate degree must present a minimum of 126 undergraduate credits of college work that fulfill all departmental requirements. It usually takes four years of academic study to earn a baccaulareate degree.

Residential and Campus Life

Modern residence halls, University-owned apartments and on-campus dining facilities make Marywood a comfortable place to live for resident students.

You'll find your areas of interest represented in over 80 student organizations, which include performing groups, honor societies and academic-interest clubs, as well as campus ministry and service-related organizations. You can also enjoy concerts, lectures, films, plays, dances, art exhibits and other activities which take place on campus.

Services for International Students

Marywood's International Student Services Advisor provides guidance concerning U.S. government regulations, campus services, activities, special programs, orientation, financial planning, health services and personal concerns.

The Intensive English Program (IEP) at Marywood offers a special opportunity for international students to develop proficiency in English. This language immersion program enables students to develop a fluency in English while adapting to cultural differences in the United States and academic requirements at Marywood.

A comprehensive orientation program is held prior to the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. At that time, students meet with faculty advisors to plan their curriculum. Additional information is sent to admitted students with the I-20 form, the document required to obtain a student visa.

Costs

The required support for the first year, including summer, must total at least $48,400 (minimum) in U.S. currency:

Tuition/General Fees $30,990
Books & Supplies/Room & Board/Personal $17,381

Second, third and fourth year projected support should be increased by increments of at least $1,000 per year. Costs are subject to change without notice.

Please note: International students (who require an I-20 form to come to the United States to study) are required to send to Marywood a $1,460 advance deposit when accepted for study at the University.

All international students are required to have medical insurance while studying at Marywood University.

Academic and Admission Requirements

To secure admission at Marywood in any field of study, a satisfactory academic record in all previous secondary, college and university work is required. SAT or ACT scores are required of applicants whose native language is English. If the candidate's first language is not English, in order to determine that he or she has sufficient proficiency in English to participate and succeed in a chosen program of study, Marywood University requires each student to submit the official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A TOEFL score of 500 or above (written), 62 (internet-based) or 173 (computer base) is required for admission.

Students who do not meet these requirements may be eligible for language study in our Intensive English Program (IEP).

A candidate must submit to the Office of Admissions a carefully, thoroughly completed application, a supplementary questionnaire, transcripts which reflect all course work in which a person has enrolled in secondary school and /or in college, SAT, ACT or TOEFL test scores and one letter of recommendation from a candidate's guidance counselor or former teacher.

Documentation of sufficient funds to cover the educational and living expenses for the duration of study are also required to obtain a student visa and for admission to Marywood University.
