IARC 508 History of Interior Architecture (3)

Examines the major ideas, movements, individuals, and socio-cultural forces that have shaped interior architecture over time. Emphasis is on how design has dealt with human use and experience in interior spatial realms. Includes discussion of furnishings, textiles, color, lighting, and systems of spatial enclosure.

IARC 510 Design Thesis I (6)

An advanced, comprehensive interior architecture project in which students will select a complex project involving an existing abandoned building in need of new life and function within the community. Students will select a project from an array of unused buildings harboring high transformational potential. Students will investigate existing conditions, develop realistic building programs, and create comprehensive schematic design alternatives for the building they choose to explore.Weekly lectures augment design studies inquiries.

IARC 512 LEED for Interior Architects (3)

Examines the effect of interior lighting in the creation of interior spaces. Includes case studies and an analysis of sustainable practices related to daylighting, energy consumption and related topics.

IARC 514 Issues in Contemporary Interior Architecture (3)

An examination of emerging issues in the field of interior architecture. Emphasis will be on innovative technologies to achieve sustainable interiors, as well as the ever-changing design challenges facing the profession.

IARC 520 Design Thesis II (6)

Part II of the graduate capstone studio project in which a schematic design from the previous semester is developed through the early design development phase. The entire Thesis project will emphasize adaptive re-use strategies that focus on sustainable design principles appropriate for the proposed design.

IARC 521 Advanced Lighting Design (3)

The role of lighting in the creation of interior spaces. Covers concepts of lighting design, including distribution, effects, luminaires, and graphic layouts. Includes case studies and an analysis of sustainable design practices related to daylighting, energy consumption, and related topics.

IARC 522 Detailing Interior Architecture (3)

This course explores the detail as an expression and extension of design intention. Interior detailing involves the focused examination of how materials are selected, joined, manipulated, and applied. Materials research of historically significant interior details will aid in the technical awareness of the student. Drawings will be developed at large scales (1:1, 1:2, 1:5) to better understand specific detailing methods. Mock-ups of prototypical details will complement the drawings and emphasis will be placed on sustainable building materials and fastening systems.

IARC 524 Professional Competencies and the NCIDQ (3)

A review of subjects covered in the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) professional exam.

IARC 549 Aesthetics (3)

An examination of theories of aesthetic experience beginning with Plato and Aristotle. Issues include the nature of architecture and art, the nature of the aesthetic experience, creativity and inspiration, art and nature, and art and mortality.

ARCH 552 Digital Media III (3)

Advanced computer application for analysis, design, and presentation.
