Empowered to Lead

Leadership is a demanding call. While some people are “born leaders,” others need guidance and the right kinds of opportunities to discover their leadership qualities and realize their potential. At Marywood University, our mission espouses “the belief that education empowers people.” In the Student Activities and Leadership Development Office (SALD), this belief is demonstrated every day, both by the students who answer the call to lead and by the staff members who guide them on this journey.

Some of the signature events and opportunities that relate to our core value of Empowerment, which also highlight student leadership, include the CONQUER Student Leadership Conference (November 4), the National Society of Leadership and Success (ongoing each semester), and the Student Government Association (ongoing goals and collaboration). Additionally, Marywood students attend and present at the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA), traditionally held in late October.

Kim Coleman, Director of Student Activities and Leadership Development (SALD), notes, “Overall, our student employees and student leaders have much autonomy over their projects, allowing them to feel empowered to make a difference and take ownership. The SALD Office challenges our students to do their best, while offering support and guidance at the same time. The conferences and development opportunities empower our students to be their best selves, both professionally and personally.”
