Tip Sheet for Navigating PDF Files

Portable Document Format (PDF) files provide an easy means for providing information on the Internet. They are an especially helpful way to provide large documents for users. A number of features are provided in Adobe Acrobat Reader to help you navigate a file.

Display size

Adobe Acrobat Reader allows the document to be displayed at a variety of sizes.

  • Use the magnifying glass button in the tool bar to increase or decrease the size of displayed text. A plus sign in the magnifying glass will cause the size of text to increase, and minus sign will cause it to decrease. Switch between the plus and minus signs by clicking and holding down the left mouse button on the maginfy tool button. A pop-up window will allow you to make the switch.

  • On the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen, a box displays the percentage of the actual size displayed. Change the percentage by clicking on the down arrow to the right of that box and selecting the desired display.

Moving from Page to Page

Arrow buttons, found both in the tool bar at the top and in the navigation bar at the bottom help you move from page to page throught the document.

  • Top:
  • Bottom:

The single arrows move you back and forth, one page at a time. The arrows coupled with a line move you to the first page or the last page of the document.

Using Bookmarks

Navigation in large files is sometimes aided by bookmarks. These appear in a frame on the lefthand side of the display and operate in a manner similar to Windows Explorer. Clicking on a topic will take you to the first page of that topic. If a box with a plus sign appears next to the topic name, that topic is expandable -- click on the box to expand the topic. Once a topic has been expanded, a minus sign appears in the box next to the topic name. Clicking on the box will close the expansion.

On Macintosh computer, right pointing arrows are used to indicate expandable topics and down pointing arrows indicate those that have been expanded. Click on the arrows to expand and collapse the topics.
