3.6 Facilities and Services 3.6.1 Library Services The library strives to meet the bibliographic needs of the entire university community. The attainment of this goal depends upon faculty members making recommendations for library acquisitions of both print and non-print materials. Faculty members are encouraged to actively participate in the collection development process by submitting requests for relevant materials to the appropriate collection management librarian(s). The library will not be responsible for payment of invoices addressed to individual faculty members for review copies. Equally important in keeping the library collection up-to-date and relevant is systematic weeding. Faculty members are encouraged to become familiar with the library holdings in their disciplines and to make recommendations relative to discarding materials that are obsolete and outdated. It is of the utmost importance that faculty members keep in mind the need for library resources when new programs and courses are being initiated. Feasibility studies should routinely include a review of relevant library holdings, as well as projected costs for the acquisition of any necessary materials not currently a part of the library collection. Faculty members may borrow books on a semester loan. Non-print materials and serials have varying loan periods. Materials charged to faculty are subject to recall if there is a request for the materials. Faculty members will receive a list of materials charged to them at the end of each semester. Faculty members may use their photo IDs to borrow books directly from area academic libraries, including University of Scranton, King's College, Wilkes University, College Misericordia, Luzerne County Community College, Keystone College, Baptist Bible College, and from the Lackawanna County Library System. They are also eligible for unmediated direct borrowing from over 40 Pennsylvania academic libraries via the library's EZBorrow. A link can be found on the library's web page. To assure both effective and efficient service to faculty and students, it is essential that faculty members confer with the librarians when planning to introduce new courses, before issuing reading lists, when making assignments of limited readings for large groups, or whenever extensive library use can be anticipated. The library faculty will provide orientation or bibliographic instruction in the use of library resources for student groups. These instruction sessions can include a general orientation to the resources including iLink, the library's online catalog and a wide variety of electronic full-text and/or indexing/ abstracting databases. They can also be tailored to address specific discipline resources or course related assignments. Contact the Information Literacy Coordinator to schedule these sessions. Print and media materials are put "on reserve" when faculty members so request. Faculty members are asked to bring the material to the Circulation Desk and fill out reserve forms. As a supplement to hard copy reserves, items may be scanned and placed on E-reserves. E-reserves can also be linked to articles in one of the full-text file. E-reserves allow students remote access to the item 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Contact the Public Services Coordinator for details Photocopiers are available in the library. Copyright Law restrictions must be observed when photocopying materials.3.6.2 Instructional Technology Services Realizing that we are living in an Information Age, and believing that modern instructional technology has a significant potential to enhance the teaching and learning environment, Marywood's Instructional Technology Services is the only campus wide service agency solely dedicated to support the instructional mission of the institution. Committed to a tradition of hospitable and professional service, I-Tech Services provides the leadership, expertise and resources required to create a learning environment adequate to the needs of students in the Information Age. In addition to providing directions to the faculty in the operation and instructional uses of on-campus and distance education classroom equipment, Instructional Technology Services assists faculty members by lending media equipment for course related use and offering training workshops on presentation, desktop publishing, digital photography, scanning, online course software, web design, and authoring programs that enhance classroom and conference presentations. Arrangements can be made with I-Tech Services staff for student training sessions in hardware and software as well. I-Tech. Services houses the Lynett Multimedia Room that seats 180, and offers rear screen projection for a number of different instructional formats including video, dvd, multi-image slide, satellite, teleconference, and computer Internet sources. Reservation for use of the Lynett Multimedia Room for special events is made through contacting I-Tech Services. Reservation of this facility for any student group must be made by its faculty advisor. I-Tech Services continues to try to provide permanently installed technology in as many campus locations as possible. All classrooms on campus include permanently installed video/vcr/access to the campus video/satellite network as well as overhead projectors. In addition to the Lynett Multimedia Room, the Crystal Room in Nazareth Hall, the Comerford Auditorium, and the McGowan Center, various classrooms on campus also include permanent access to computer presentation technology. As this is an on-going project, contact I-Tech Services for an updated list of classrooms with permanently installed computer/projection equipment and the appropriate procedures for reserving those facilities. Instructional Technology Services is responsible for the loan of all media equipment for use by students and faculty on and off campus. Forms are available for special services such as dubbing, graphic, satellite programming, etc. Such services will be provided within the constraints of copyright guidelines. Check the I-Tech Services web site for information about various copyright restrictions that may impact a service request. Portable video equipment training (video and digital cameras, video projectors, and laptop computers) is also provided for faculty and students for academic use of the equipment. Faculty members must confirm that student use of available equipment is course related by signing appropriate authorization forms available at the I-Tech Services desk. Instructional Technology Services are supplied on a first-come first-served basis. One day advance notice constitutes the minimum reservation allowance if delivery of equipment to a classroom is expected. I-Tech Services staff do not make equipment deliveries to faculty offices. Preview rooms are available in the I-Tech Services office area in the Media Center to listen to or view videotapes, dvds, cds, records, cassettes, etc. Faculty members may borrow and return reserved media materials on a class-to-class basis. I-Tech Services is primarily responsible for the purchase of instructional technology equipment and software to support classroom computer unit needs. Requests for purchase or rental of AV equipment are made to the Coordinator of Technical and Instructional Support, and requests for AV materials are made to the Collection Management Librarian for Non-Print. Within certain restrictions, a limited amount of instructional equipment is available for use by faculty at off-campus events. When such events occur, faculty members will be asked to sign forms agreeing to be held accountable for damages or loss while equipment is in their possession. I-Tech. Services is also responsible for the campus cable system and the Electronic Bulletin Board. Announcements are generally posted on this service for a period of no longer than two weeks. Announcement forms are available either from I-Tech services or can be submitted directly through www.marywood.edu/www2/medweb/, the I-Tech Services web site. 3.6.3 Computer Training and User Support Services 3.6.4 Conditions of Computer Use 3.6.5 Web Pages 3.6.6 Home Page Policy 3.6.7 Distance Education and e-Learning The Distance Education and e-Learning Department is responsible for the coordination of Web Based learning, videoconferencing, and other distance education technologies.
