Facilities

All students benefit from Marywood's commitment to provide all students with state-of-the-art technology. This commitment includes access to the Internet and World Wide Web, as well as access to dozens of academic software packages in fifteen computer labs and drop-in centers around campus. Further, students who own computers may have them linked to the campus network in their dormitory rooms. Computer lab software includes, but is not limited to, Microsoft Office, PageMaker, web page development tools, web browsers, specialized art, business, education, music and science software and statistical packages.

The Library, located in the Learning Resources Center (LRC), situated at the heart of the campus, maintains a collection that includes a wide array of books, print periodicals and non-print items. An electronic public access catalog provides holdings and availability information for the collection. It is accessible via the Internet. In addition, numerous electronic databases are also available through the Library’s website.

Instructional Technology Services provides audiovisual, graphic, photographic, television, multi-image and technology equipment services to the campus. More than 900 pieces of equipment are provided for campus-wide media support services.

Two state-of-the-art multimedia theaters offer large screen viewing of videos, films, slides, computer input, and satellite programming. The 180-seat Lynett Multimedia Room is located in the Media Center and the 100-seat Comerford Auditorium is located in the Center for Natural and Health Sciences. In addition, a state-of-the-art interactive videoconferencing facility is located in the Media Center. Video and audio connections to state, national and international resources are available.

Technological support specific to the Communication Sciences and Disorders Program includes equipment illustrating anatomy and physiology and simulating human hearing performance, as well as for analyzing speech and language. Perhaps of greatest interest to you is that Marywood's William G. McGowan Center for Graduate and Professional Studies, where the program is housed, is home to the Marywood Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. Here you'll have the chance to work with individuals with speech, language, and hearing difficulties. The clinic is equipped with video monitors and a complete audiological evaluation facility.

The Counseling/Psychology Department (undergraduate, graduate and Psy.D. programs) is housed in the McGowan Center for Graduate and Professional Studies. This building features state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. These facilities support Counseling and Psychology students in their clinical training, the development of multimedia training materials, student research, psychological testing, and electronic communication.
Specialized facilities in Psychology and Counseling include:

  • Psychological Services Center (PSC); a clinic providing mental health services to the community, training facilities in undergraduate, master, and doctoral-level practica (one-way observation rooms for individual, group, and family therapies), videotaping facilities.
  • Research Laboratory includes a group meeting room and eight individual research cubicles. Each of the reseach cubiles houses a computer that allows students to run 'on-line' data collection using the MacLaboratory and MelLab programs, along with standard word processing, statistics, spreadsheet, internet, and PsychLit and other on-line data bases (e.g., MedLine).
  • Stress and Coping Laboratory provides students with access to psychophysiology monitoring equipment (biofeedback, polygraph integrated with a computer interface), videotape editing, digital video, and CD-ROM authoring capabilities.
  • Neuropsychology Laboratory, provides access to neuropsychology assessment devices (e.g., the Halstead-Reitan Battery) and research in the area of neuropsychology.

The Education Program (undergraduate and graduate) maintains a curriculum laboratory of texts, manipulative materials, and software designed for K-12 programs. The University’s Media Center offers sophisticated resources, including interactive video for instruction. For those whose goal is to work with infants, toddlers, and preschool-age children, opportunities are available to observe and teach right on campus, in Marywood's own childcare and preschool programs.

Specialized facilities for students pursuing Special Education studies (undergraduate and graduate) include the McGowan Center and the Special Education Curriculum Laboratory. The University library contains many volumes devoted to special education topics, and a collection of audio-visual materials related to the major (including a tape collection on individual assessment and teaching modules for early intervention and the at-risk infant).
