500 The Law and Special Education
(2)
Presents litigation and legislation involving the rights to
treatment, to a fair classification and to education. Discusses
student and teacher rights and responsibilities.
504 Diagnosing and Remediating Arithmetic Difficulties (1)
This course is intended for the classroom practitioner who wishes
to acquire skills in administering and interpreting formal and
informal assessment tools, as well as remedial strategies for
the learning disabled and slow learner. A case typing approach
will be utilized.
506 Instruction Support/Teacher Consultation (1)
An investigation of current trends in the delivery of instructional
services will be emphasized. Emerging roles of the special educator
will be explored through the current research base.
507 Characteristics and Remedial Strategies
for the Mildly Impaired (3)
Detailed examination of etiology, characteristics and intervention
for those who need learning, emotional and physical support.
Emphasis on the interrelatedness of the disabilities imposed
on the processes of motivation, learning and social adaptation.
508 Characteristics and Program Strategies for the
Moderately and Severely Impaired (3)
Detailed examination of etiology, characteristics and intervention
for those who are moderately and severely mentally and physically
disabled. Emphasis on the inter-relatedness of the disabilities
imposed on the processes of motivation, learning and social
adaptation.
510 A, B, C Movement and Expressive Arts for the
Exceptional Individual (1, 1, 1)
A series of participatory experiences conducted by specialists
from the fields of physical education, recreation, music and
art. Designed to promote use and value of these experiences
for exceptional individuals.
511 Curriculum Adaptations for the Special-Needs Learner (3)
A course dealing with the analysis of performance characteristics
of the mildly impaired learner and with the development of remedial
procedures, teaching strategies and inclusive practices for
amelioration of learning deficits.
518 Special Topics (variable)
From time to time, offered to give in-depth consideration to
a topic of importance. (Prerequisite: two courses in Special
Education.)
519 Practicum in Special Education (3)
Classroom experience relating theory and practice with individuals
with disabilities in school settings. Required of all students
seeking a second certification. A professional portfolio will
be required of all students. Registration is by permission of
the Chairperson.
522 Career Education for the Disabled (3)
An in-depth study of methods and techniques to develop career
education programs for adolescents and young adults with disabilities.
Designed to aid teachers, vocational counselors, administrators
and other concerned personnel in establishing and operating
work-study programs and sheltered workshop experiences.
523 Programming for the At-Risk Infant/Preschool Child (3)
Explores the strategies developed for identification of the
target population from birth to five years, as well as evaluation
techniques and early intervention. Investigates the success
and problems of established procedures.
535 Cognitive Remediation/Rehabilitation (3)
This course is designed to give the practitioner a basic understanding
of the underlying processes involved in all mental activities.
The primary focus is how we acquire, store, retrieve and use
knowledge. Special emphasis is placed on application of these
principles in learning situations.
536 Cognitive Assessment and Remediation (3)
The objective of this course is to develop the skills required
to assess the level of cognitive functioning of students and
to develop programs of remediation and treatment based on existing
strengths and challenges.
537 Practicum in Cognitive Remediation/Rehabilitation (3)
The purpose of this course is to give the student clinical experience
relating theory and practice with cognitively impaired individuals
in field work settings. A minimum of 90 clock hours in one semester
must be spent on this assignment. Individual and group meetings
are also required. The instructor must approve the schedule
and site. (Prerequisite: S ED 535, 536.)
539 Behavior Management Approaches (3)
Provides competency in individual and group technology following
a format that aims at facilitating setting up and implementing
a behavior-change program in applied settings. Design of intervention
programs using a variety of strategies is required.
540 Administration and Supervision of Special Education Programs
(3)
Consideration of the determination, establishment and function
of educational programs for exceptional children, designed for
administrative and supervisory
personnel.
542 The Gifted (3)
An examination of the correlates and characteristics of the
gifted and talented, educational practices and the needs of
culturally diverse and disabled, gifted persons.
543 Materials, Strategies for the Gifted Student (3)
Directing independent study programs; flexible classroom management;
guiding student research; methods and programs for the gifted;
new approaches to fostering learning (such as inquiry, simulation,
games, etc.).
544 Practicum in Special Education Supervision (3)
The purpose of this course is to give the student practical
experience in supervision. A minimum of 150 clock hours in one
semester must be spent on this assignment. This is accomplished
under the supervision of a certified supervisor, according to
a definite schedule, mutually approved by the instructor and
cooperating supervisor. A professional portfolio will be required
of all students. (Prerequisite: S ED 540.)
545 a, b, c Individual Research in Applied Settings (1, 1, 1)
The practical application of statistical analysis and research
design related to the field of special education and exceptional
individuals. An individually-directed, in-depth investigation
of scientific methodology is necessary in the development of
a research project. Presentation of the completed investigation
is required. (Prerequisites: prior topic approval by department
faculty; EDUC 501.)
