Faculty News
Dr. Arter presented A Comparison of Student Teachers' Skills for Teaching Students with Disabilities at the International Conference on Learning Disabilities on October 4th-6th, 2008.
Dr. Arter will present Service Learning and Digital Stories: A Tool for Reflection for Pre-Service Special Educators at
the Pennsylvania Council for Exceptional Children Conference on
November 6th and 7th, 2008. She will present that at the National
Council for Exceptional Children Convention on April 1st-4th, 2009 in
Seattle, Washington as well.
Dr. Arter has contributed to a new publication entitled Wellness Toolkit: An Interactive DVD with CD Curriculum Guide for Grades 5-8.
She wrote the curriculum on self-esteem, body image, peer pressure, and
decision making for grades 5-8. Dr. Arter also facilitated the student
group that appears in the video.

Student Accomplishments
We would like to congratulate Colleen Davis, Jennifer Yacus, and
Kendra Taylor for being selected to present at two different
conventions! They presented their poster entitled Big Things Come in Small Packages: A Small University's SCEC is Taking Off at
the 2007 PACEC Convention on November 2nd, 2007. They also
presented their poster at the National CEC's Annual Convention
and Expo in Boston on April 4th, 2008 during the Student Forum.
Congratulations!
The Special Education Department has four Master's Degree graduates
this May! Join us in congratulating Deanna Semyon, Nicole Giovangnoli,

Award Application
The Margaret Ruddy Dougherty Medal for Academic Excellence is a
prestigious award given to a student who is seeking a B.S. degree in
Special Education and has completed a minimum of 60 credits at
Marywood. The award is available to students who will be
graduating in the upcoming year, and the application is typically due
in late February. In addition to the previous requirements,
students must also have a 3.25 QPI in major course work and general
coursework and show evidence of meaningful services to the
college/department or community. Community service is to be
documented by support letters. If you are interested in applying
for the award, click here to download the application! You can hand in your completed application to Dr. Arter.
