Philosophy Statement

In accordance with the goals and objectives of Marywood University, the Master of Arts degrees in Music are directed toward the development of the student as an outstanding professional and musician in his/her field. Two degree programs are offered to provide academic and practical training. They are designed to promote growth, to enrich and update the career in which the individual functions, and to prepare the graduate for further study. Applicants for a Master of Arts degree in music must have an undergraduate degree in music or a bachelor's degree in another subject plus the required level of musical proficiency specific to the intended degree program.

Program Information

Marywood offers two graduate level degrees: M.A. in Music Education, and M.A. in
Church Music. Both are 36 credit hour programs. The Music Education masterâs
offers three distinct areas of concentration: K-12 vocal education, instrumental education, or music education/music history emphasis. The graduate program includes classes offered during the fall and spring semesters as well as summer sessions, including online courses. Prior approval of credits taken at another institution is required.

Admission Requirements

Admission to any of the programs will be based on the general requirements of the
university and on the recommendation of a departmental admissions committee. A
departmental entrance exam in music history and music theory is required for all
degrees. The Church Music program requires an audition/interview. A videotape of
music education teaching is required for the Music Education program if the applicant is currently in a teaching position. Otherwise, an audition/interview is required as with the M.A. in Church Music. All candidates are required to complete 36 semester hours. In addition, the candidate must pass a comprehensive examination
and complete a Professional Contribution or thesis appropriate to the degree under the direction of a member of the Music Department faculty.
